In a study of 1,642 postmenopausal women in Sri Lanka had an estimated prevalence of 45% having osteoporosis. In men it drops to about 6%. The difference can be explained by the fact that men work outdoor and their bones gets strong, whilst most women mostly stay at home and is also affected by hormonal imbalance after menopause. Osteoporosis is estimated to affect 200 million women worldwide – approximately one-tenth of women aged 60, one-fifth of women aged 70, two-fifths of women aged 80 and two-thirds of women aged 90.
