OLD REST HOUSES OF THE JAFFNA PENINSULA-by HUGH KARUNANAYAKE Source:Island Rest houses were the pioneering institutions associated with the hospitality industry in Ceylon of the period between the 18th and 20th Centuries. Readers may be surprised to note that “Rest House” is an institution found only in Sri Lanka. The name seems to be derived from the Dutch term Rust Huys which was the appellation in use when they were originally established during the days of Dutch rule over the island’s maritime provinces. They were originally used as inns or hostelry for the use of the Governor or leading government officials when visiting local areas when there were neither hotels nor proper roads to the island. Its Indian counterpart during days of British rule was called “Inspection Bungalows” or IBs and also as Dak bungalows. Thuparama: Sri Lanka’s first dagoba- by M.A.R.Manukulasooriya Source:Sundayobserver Thuparama in Anuradhapura is considered as the first dagoba built Sri Lanka after the introduction of Buddhism. Arahat Mahinda, an envoy sent by King Ashoka introduced Buddhism to the country during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa. The king who met Arahat Mahinda at Mihintale, was the first to embrace Buddhism. Under the patronage of the Thera, the king built the Thuparama stupa in the 3rd century B.C. enshrining the collarbone of the Buddha. According to legend, the earth had shaken at the ceremony held to place the sacred relics. River cruise by Five Schoolboys from St. Anthony’s College Mahaweli River Cruise by 5 Antonians in the 1950s. Shane took me to the mouth of the Mahaweli River after many years where our Great Mahaweli canoe Trip ended at MUTUR. The road & Bridge were not there & the memory of our final day is as vivid as ever. Five Schoolboys from St. Anthony’s College carried out & completed an adventure that was treated as the impossible.
