DESMOND KELLY

NT Young Australian of the Year 2018 – Kevin Kadirgamar BY Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ “NT- YOUNG AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR” Kevin Kadirgamar.      Excellent news. The new “Young Australian of 2018” is still another Lankan/Australian that all of us should be very proud of. His name, Kevin Kadirgamar, grandson of Rajan Kadirgamar, a former Principal of Jaffna College Sri Lanka, and incidentally, a relative of another Rajan Kadirgamar, a former “Captain of the Royal Ceylon Navy from 1960-1970.      eLanka is happy to congratulate Kevin on his recent achievement & wish him all the very best for the future. He left his birthplace (Sri Lanka), to escape the civil conflict there, while still in his early teens &, as a result has a deep appreciation for the fact that, in Australia, through sheer hard work & determination, became a refugee & migration lawyer, and, in ...

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE – A MUSICAL ODYSSEY by Bernard VanCuylenburg Dear members & readers of eLanka, I have been extremely fortunate to meet, and, in turn, introduce all of you to Bernard VanCuylenberg, another good Dutch Burgher from Lanka, who, in my opinion, is a “Superb writer of Stories”, in poetic vein, “Bernard Van, is a man, who certainly can”. There are not too many “writers” who are perfectionists. Bernard is one of them and his expertise can now be shared by all of us. Every “story” coming in from Bernard will, of course, bear his name, as the writer. We are indeed lucky to have him write for us.  Desmond Kelly. HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE – A MUSICAL ODYSSEY by Bernard VanCuylenburg In contrast to the lyrical title of this article, I am compelled to refer to the writings of Celaleddin Rumi one of  the world’s greatest mystic philosophers ...

“IN SPAIN THEY SAY “SI SI” – By Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ In Spain, they say “si si’, in France they say ‘”vi vi” Every little Dutch girl says “ya” “ya” Every little Danish “doll” says “da” But sweetheart, tell me why? No matter how I try Won’t you answer to my plea Just say it in any language to me When will you say “si si”. Spanish is a.beautiful language, isn’t it? , this is why I have decided to “introduce” one of the more “modern” Artistes of the day, to all our “on-line” readers of eLanka. His name is Bryan Adams, popular, extremely well known, even to the older folk such as ” yours truly” another “Icon” to the younger ones, of course.   No, people, Bryan does not sing in Spanish, as a matter of fact, the little “verse” above has absolutely nothing to do with this ...

“IF I CAN FIND A CLEAN SHIRT, I MIGHT” By Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’   My dear readers, Could anyone of you please come up with a better “title” for a song ?. Please do not reply with the “comment”, “If I can find a clean shirt, I might”!. In these days of “same-sex” marriage, I would then ask you, “what the hell is your partner doing, not washing & ironing your shirts?. That, of course, will be asked of the “butch”partner of a homo–sexual duo. (The She/male here is supposed to do the “puluka-work”,(menial-work), right?. My friends, I am very happy about the “yes” vote, BUT, for the life of me, I CANNOT still work out the male & female difference between these homosexual “couples”. With the “two-guy” system, the ONLY bearded lady, I thought, would be confined to “Circus-work”, so the unbearded ones must then be ...

“ROCK N ROLL-COUNTRY STYLE” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’    Australia, as a Country, is the great brown Land that many of us, Lankan/Aussies are lucky to be living in, at the moment. How it will be, in the future, is anybody’s guess. Australia’s”Country Musicians”, while getting better, “As time goes by”, still have a long way to go, in comparison to their American counterparts. America, while boasting some of the greatest “names” in Country Music, also has had dozens of singers, bands & instrumentalists who were simply just “wannabes”, coming in from all over the World to “record”their songs in the U.S.of A, where, I believe, there are now more than 150 Radio Stations dedicated totally to “Country Music”. Tune in 24/7 for Country Music. How wonderful, excepting for the fact that, right now, it is no longer called by it’s original name. It is now, ...

BOTH SIDES OF GOODBYE by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ The song was written by Kim Williams & Jackson Leap. Sung to perfection by another “Country Icon”, Ray Price. This would have to be one of the “best” titles, especially for a “Country Song”. This is also another “tid-bit” for thousands of eLanka readers, on line. Although “Country” is my forte, my tastes in music are “catholic”. We, @ eLanka, do not “present” these little “articles” for any financial gain whatsoever. “Musical Genres” differ vastly, I take nothing away from the fact that modern Music & Artistes make lots of money & good luck to them. However, the fact remains, that as far as I am concerned, a “song”, in the true meaning of the word, is a “condensed-story”. What an “author” writes in “paragraphs”, a “songwriter” writes in much shorter “verses”. Not all, but many modern songs are ...

BUTTONS & BOWS by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ Mr. Daniel Ellsberg, on the A.B.C.(7.30 Report on 4/1/2018), an older, obviously intelligent man, totally, it seems, against the latest rhetoric of the President of the United States of America who has compared “buttons” with the President of North Korea. I am an older, also intelligent man (hopefully), a Lankan/ Aussie, seated on a comfortable armchair, at home, in Victoria, watching this “report” with interest, to report to my many thousands of readers on eLanka, that “buttons” are not “my thing”, however, many older Lankans in Australia at the moment, will remember the “special” trouser buttons that used to come in 3 parts. (2 semicircular brown halves, with a little “connector” in the centre), to hold the “fly” of the trousers in place, until one had to undo one or two, at the bottom, for a “pee”. To describe the above, ...

“AIYOH, VAYA -CON – DIOS” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ “What to do,men? (aiyoh), Vaya (go) Con (with) Dios( God), Possibly, a good way of starting the New Year of 2018, telling the “rocket-man” where to go, if he keeps on firing his “fireworks”, but, much more importantly, for all my favourite readers of what will be the “Premier” Website for all Lankan/Aussies everywhere, (we are already in the “top 50” & have a medal to prove it), let me “put-it” another way. The song, “Vaya-con-Dios” was written by Larry Russell, Inez James & Buddy Pepper in 1953. ...

“BURGHER BUGGERS” Drinking Whisky by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’      Doubtless, most of us will probably remember the little “Lansi-Limerick” (above), I certainly do, although most of us could not afford to drink the bloody stuff and had to- make–do with “Kassippu & Arracku”(even “Mendis-Special” was too expensive for us), and unfortunately, I did not know Prasanna at the time. I met my good friend Prasanna Mendis in Melbourne, fairly late in the piece, and, by this time, we were only drinking Ceylon Tea. Please NOTICE, that, while “She” became “Shri Lanka”(the resplendant Isle), in 1972/3, “Ceylon Tea” has remained, and always will remain, the very BEST tea in the World. Forget tea from anywhere else, and forget the “Brands”, ANY Ceylon-Tea, grown on the beautiful highland tea-estates, especially, would have to be the BEST non-intoxicating “brew”on the Planet.       Stop digressing Des, & get down to ...

“2018, THE A.B.& C OF IT” by Desmond Kelly ‘the Star of eLanka’ There used to be a famous slogan in Ceylon, as I remember her, (important “things” are always, or should, always be referred to, in the female gender, because, while we cannot sometimes live with them, we certainly cannot live without them!),”TIME PASSES, QUALITY REMAINS”. This little “ad” was in reference to a “wristlet watch”,.as we knew them, but let us leave the “brand” to the advertising “gurus” of old. The fact remains, that, while it is quite amazing how time actually passes, I wonder why the quality (of life), while remaining, has deteriorated to the extent it has. Before I go any further, let me be the first to wish EVERYONE a happy New Year. My first story for eLanka, “2018, THE A.B.& C OF IT” is, believe it or not, based on the Administration, Betterment & Care of ...
