DESMOND KELLY

“ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” SERIES 18 (R) – By Des Kelly From one “story-teller” to another. Firstly, the original “S.T”., came from America. I have written about Tom T. Hall very often. His “stories in song” were always appreciated by his audiences all over the World, and the double entendre that I offer the readers of eLanka are also favourites of mine. Tom wrote “Ravishing Ruby” after visiting this truck-stop cafe in Redding, as a truck-driver, where her met this young waitress and decided to write a song about her.Clayton Delaney was also a personal friend of Tom, I believe, and both songs are superb “Country-fare”. Following Tom. T. Hall, is Australia’s “Story-Story-teller”. Another fine Aussie talent who eventually went off to America, then toured the World, making music, was Kevin Johnson. He was a singer/songwriter/guitarist & entertainer of no mean repute. While the icon of Australian Country was, and will always be, ...

ALPHABETICALLY YOURS SERIES 17 (Q) – By Des Kelly They tell us that French is the language of love, but there is nothing wrong in giving “Italian” the same status. As we all know, some Italian vocalists (and bands) are, without a shadow of a doubt, on the top rungs of the “musical ladder” of fame. Italians are among the best “tenors” in the World, Sophia Loren would still have to be one of the most beautiful “olderLadies” on our Planet, although I don’t think that she “sings” very much. Now, where am I going with this Series 17 ?. Oh, yes, I remember it now. A friend of mine, made a name for himself, singing numbers mostly recorded by Englebert Humperdinck, and so, I have decided to put in an Italian song entitled ” Quando quando, quando” (Italian for, When ?, Woman, When ?). a question that, I suppose, ...

ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” SERIES 16 (P) – By Des Kelly It is certainly a wonderful “feeling”, a peaceful, easy one, as performed by a more recent group calling themselves the “Eagles”, a superb bunch of musicians from America, founded initially by Glenn Frey on vocals & guitar, and Don Henley (also vocals, and Drums), plus Bernie Leadon (another guitarist and backing vocalist), & Randy Meisner on bass & vocals, they became one of the most sought-after “groups” of the 70’s era, winning many awards along the way, but “lost” original founder Glenn Frey in 2016, but carried on with other members including Joe Walsh, Don Felder, & Timothy D Schmit, and still do the odd gig to date. Because of the multi-talented individuals & songwriters in this group, there was obviously going to be some “divisions” as to their ideas, so, although I have picked “the peaceful, easy feeling” with which ...

“ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” SERIES 15 (O) – By Des Kelly </ifram And so, we come to “The Storyteller” as he was called. Tom.T.Hall, born in May, 1936 in Kentucky, another multi-talented performer. He sang, of course, (in story-telling vein), played guitar, banjo, mandolin & even a saxophone, at times, started to be “noticed” by the Nashville hierarchy in 1963, and he wrote his first “hit” for Jeannie C.Reilly (the girl more likely), the called her, titled “Harper Valley P.T.A.” This song became a No1 hit for Jeannie & from then on, Tom also began to score his own hits, 10 of which, went to No.1, catapulting the story-teller into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He had 26 more songs climbing into the top-ten, got married to Iris Dixie Dean (who he fondly nicknamed Miss Dixie), and had one son, named Dean. Tom.T.Hall “returns” in this particular Series of mine, later on, ...

“ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” SERIES 14 (N) by Des Kelly The man who was “Country’s Frank Sinatra (who was supposed to have been technically, the best singer in the World, in his time), George Jones, God rest his Soul, was always a great singer, but the one that made him ultra-famous, was a song that his Management did not want him to record, because, as they put it, this was far too sad a song, and the public would never buy it. George Jones, also nicknamed “the Possum”, told them, in no uncertain terms, that HE loved the song and would record it anyway (and that was that!!). “He stopped loving her today” became one of the biggest Country Hits in history, the Possum, married to Tammy Wynette (female “Star” of the same era), left her, temporarily(it seems), after having had to “ride” his motor mower to the bar in town, when ...

“ALPHABETICAL YOURS” SERIES 13 (M) – By Des Kelly They were four talented brothers, Barry, Maurice, Robin & Andy, born on the Isle of Man to English parents, migrated as youngsters, but went back to England to further their career, where Andy, the youngest broke away from the group to “go solo”. did record a few songs, but never did come up the the popularity of his other three siblings. Tragically, he died very young, at 30 years of age leaving the “Bee-Gees”Barry, Maurice and Robin to carry on, involved in a “multi-showbiz” career, recording, themselves, backing other top-ranking “acts”, writing songs, singing in 3part harmony, and doing it superbly. Unfortunately, Maurice and brother Robin also died while still in their prime, R.I.P., guys, leaving the eldest, Barry to carry on the memories of their famous name. I would like to insert one of their Original Compositions, actually, one of ...

“MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC” – By Des Kelly     Now, here is something that I can really write about. Firstly, I am an avid “watcher” of the A.B.C., but not because the dozen or more Commercial Television Stations in Melbourne are inferior, not by a long shot, for instance, I always make it a point of watching “Seven’s” weather forecast each evening, even though I really do not care what the weather is, or is going to be. I still prefer 7’s weather. Secondly, ONLY advertisements involving animals and/or advertisements that feature good background music, such as the ones produced with Wayne Newton singing “Danke Shoen”(thank you, darling, thank you very much), are bearable to watch. Most of the rest are silly, if not downright stupid. These advertisements turn customers off, rather than on, & Thirdly, the BEST thing about television “ads”, is that one can take a few minutes ...

“WHAT A LOT OF BULL”? – By Des Kelly We have some “BREAKING NEWS” which is not just “bull” in any sense of the word. This “good news” comes especially to members of eLanka, from someone who could be trusted to “enliven” the lives of mainly Lankan/Aussies, plus many Lankan/Pommies, plus ANY Lankans, anywhere, who are feeling a bit despondent at all. I refrain from divulging the name of this crazy person, and will leave it to my many readers to figure out who it is. There is a well-known “quote” that tells us that ALWAYS ! “A Woman comes first, even to the gallows”. I firmly believe this, only, this time, it’s a COW we are talking about. In the Land that breeds a hell of a lot of Cows,”Knickers” is a COW, NOW, in the news. “HOW NOW” ?, you ask. It is certainly not a silly question, ...

“ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” SERIES 12. (L) – By Des Kelly Texas is famously known as one of the biggest States in America. In Texas, everything is supposed to be larger than life. However, about 19 km from Fredericksburg, in the hill -Country of Texas, known as one of the best “venues” of good old Country Music, is the little Town named Luckenbach, sometimes pronounced “Lookin bach”, where dwells an uncoordinated Community who decided that both Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson record a song dedicated to them, and this is exactly what happened. Luckenbach Texas therefore became another “hit” for this famous duo, and, because I love the song, I have decided to share it with our eLanka Community, which is growing, by the day. We now proudly boast more than 20 thousand members who receive personal newsletters every week, and, who, no doubt, will enjoy Waylon & Willie, followed by a ...

“Red Planet-Robotic-Push” – By Des Kelly A few months ago (5th May 2018), to be exact, a rocket appropriately named “Insight” was launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 9.05 pm AEST.,was in “Cruise-mode” for 6 months, got there after a 60 day “Approach to the surface phase”, taking only about 6 minutes during the descent/entry stage to successfully land gently on Mars, the Red Planet at exactly 7 minutes to 7am, Melbourne time. About 33.9 million miles from Earth, where humanoids are desperately searching for another Planet to “migrate” to, Mars will now have to be “probed” by some “bloody boring apparatus” to the depth of about 5 miles to find out whether there is any water down there, I suppose, to keep the new migrants living. We are, as everybody knows, heavily over-populated on Earth, at the moment. Every-bloody-where. !!! In the near future, after ...
