DESMOND KELLY

“INSECTS IN MUSIC” – By Des Kelly There are billions or trillions of insects around, so what is so special about “Beetles”?. Why did Buddy Holly wish to name his “group” the above, then, for some strange reason, decided to call them “The Crickets”?, when he could not even hold a bat straight, let alone use it, he could not bowl a “doosra”, bowl underarm, or even use sandpaper, BUT, my friends, he noticed a few insects who were making a lot of noise in his garden, yes, folks, they were indeed, Crickets.!! Following all this important information, four British lads who had admired Buddy Holly from afar, suddenly decided to form a group, and decided to call themselves the “Beetles” in tribute to Buddy’s “Crickets”, but because they couldn’t spell, added an “a”where there should have been another “e”, ending up in the word “Beatles”, a word, unfortunately, not ...

ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” (SERIES) 2 She was one of the prettiest “song-stars” to ever grace a stage, Linda Ronstadt features in A.Y.Elanka (2), with the song “BLUE BAYOU”, written originally (& recorded) by the late great Roy Orbison & Joe Melson, who incidentally is still considered to be one of America’s top songwriters. Two of his “hits” included Blue Bayou & “Crying” & still another titled “Blue Angel” was written by him on the day his daughter Michelle was born. Something else that most of my readers may not know was the fact that Linda Ronstadt was indeed one of the back-up singers to Roy Orbison when he recorded Blue Bayou in 1963, then, made it her own huge hit, when she recorded it in 1977. In my opinion, Linda was an absolutely superb Artiste who, tragically, had to give up performing in 2011 because of Parkinson’s disease. Ladies & Gentlemen, ...

“I’M GLAD FOR YOUR SAKE” (But sorry for mine) – By Des Kelly Where would you ever find song-titles like that?. I’m glad for my sake, but sorry for your’s, if you are not aware that it takes a Country Music Songwriter to think up rather long, but still very meaningful “titles” such as the above one. To top it off, the song is just another Country- favourite of mine, and I do have dozens of them, written in 1937, by Peter Tinturin and Jack Lawrence, & a bloke named Andy Kirk & his twelve clouds of joy recorded it as a single, exactly one year after this writer was born. Many Artistes of that particular era also recorded the song, but then came Douglas Sahm, born on the 6th of November 1941, dying on the 18thof November, 1999, aged just 58 years. He was considered a “child prodigy” of ...

“ALPHABETICALLY YOURS” (Especially for eLanka) – By Des Kelly This is a very special “Series” of musical-memories for all eLankan readers everywhere. The “title” tells the story. The music, both vocal and instrumental has been chosen by me, mainly to bring back precious memories to all of you, out there. The World, chaotic, as it is, cannot go on, without music. Of course, I do realize that music in general is entirely “catholic”, “to each, his own”(as the title of still another song admits), but, as the very proud editor of the best “on-line” website for Lankans in Australia, I now refer to “our mob” especially, and, for you, folks, I’d like to present you with all the very best of music, alphabetically. I am doing this for two very good reasons. Firstly, I LOVE good music, as does my good friend, Neil Jayasekera, the owner of the eLanka website. ...

“DEAR JOHN” – By Des Kelly   Continuing my “Stories- in-Song” (Country-style), this is one that references the past Korean war, where an American soldier, named John, gets a letter from his girlfriend, telling him that she was sorry, but felt that she had already waited too long for him to come home, and as a result, had decided to get married to someone else, and, to make bad matters worse, to his kid brother Don. Just imagine it, if you will, people. Here is this guy, fighting for the Stars & Stripes, against, quite possibly the grandfather of the “Rocket-Man” who has been the subject of many of my recent stories for eLanka, waiting for the day when he could go back home to marry his childhood sweetheart, only to get this letter from her, beginning with “Dear John”. American songwriters Billy Barton, LewisTalley & Fuzzy Owens got together ...

THE WORLD WEEPS” (While Pariahs Prosper) – by Des Kelly Armistice day, 2018. One hundred years since the guns of the first World War (supposedly the war to end all Wars) were silenced, hopefully to fulfil the supposition above, but what happens ?, A little pariah Corporal, failed artist, charisma of a gnat, moustache & all, BUT, with the gift of the gab, suddenly takes over, forms a “Party” under a geometrical sign, named the “Swastika”, seduces a Nation that was going through difficult times, with shouted promises from atop his soapbox, gets promoted to the top of his class, gains the trust of his people, gathers a bunch of like-minded pariahs, and, instead of being satisfied with everything they now have gained, decide to put a finish to the entire Nation which previously boasted Jesus Christ, among others, and having almost accomplished this nefarious act, then becomes the brother ...

“HUNG UP”(On you) – By Des Kelly   Don’t “hang-up” on me, folks. Not just yet, anyway. Here is a remarkable good-news story, closely following another “crazy” one, with some idiot running amok in Melbourne, very recently, indeed, stabbing people to death, setting a vehicle alight in the heart of the C.B.D., trying to stab a couple of Policemen, when a third one came up and shot the S.O.B., unfortunately, in that hospital resources had to become involved, caring for this idiot, using Melbourne taxpayer money, to do so. People can now “watch” these things as they happen (on television), with the technology we now boast about. This crazy episode had people screaming “Oh God”, not another terrorist attack, is it”?. I certainly do not intend to publicize this bad news any more than I have to, people have only to switch on their T.V. to get further details, but ...

“ANOTHER DAWN” – by Des Kelly   There has to be something about THIS particular name! Talking about “Dawn”, the one to whom I dedicated a song, a most beautiful, loving, caring, woman, who would “light-up” any room she entered, with just her smile and personality, but was sadly taken away from us, in 2016, at 73 years of age. God bless you, & may you rest in peace, Dawn. Dawn Wells, aka Mary Ann Summers of the television sitcom Gilligan’s Island, is, at 80 years of age, the “last” Dawn, who still survives from the “Cast” of that show which was quite popular during my early years in Australia. She was an American teenager whose “bad knees” prevented her from becoming a ballerina, yet, she did become Miss Nevada in 1960, and was a very pretty addition to the “Island”. Good luck Dawn & God bless you too. Dawn ...

“Aiyho, what to do men”? – By Des Kelly Nothing, really. Although this this “exclamation” is most popularly used in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu, & Tamil-speaking parts of Sri Lanka, generally, also Malaysia & Singapore, believe it or not, the word originates from China. How it would actually be “written” in Chinese, I would not know, but what I do know is the fact that China, as a Country, would have very little reason to utter this quote, as their population seems to be growing twice as fast as any of the other Nations involved & they certainly know what to do (men), without us, from Sri Lanka providing the answer Desmond Kelly.  Star of eLanka. (Editor-in-Chief).     ...

“GAMBLING CHAMPIONS” (You bet!!) – By Des Kelly Nearly twenty four billion dollars annually (you bet), makes Australians. including, sadly, Lankan/Aussies, as I call all Sri Lankans now living permanently in Australia, the Gambling Champions of the World, NOTHING TO BE PROUD OF!!. Every year, as time goes by, it steadily gets worse. Aussies will gamble on anything. If there are two flies crawling up a wall, they will bet on which fly “takes-off” first, there are horse races, dog races, trotting races, camel races, right down to cockroach races, it doesn’t matter a jot. “Let’s have a bet on that” would have to be one of the most famous phrases coming out of Aussie mouths. It staggers me to think that so much money is wasted on a “habit” that ends up in total losses to the gambler, 90% of the time. The other 10% might win once or ...
