“SAMMY SINGS” by Des Kelly A typical “honky-tonk” song of the mid 1950’s, written by Luke McDaniel, first recorded in 1962, it was the symbol of what “Country Songs” were all about. George Jones, reputed to be the “Sinatra of Country”(Frank Sinatra who  earned his undisputed fame as, technically the best singer in the World, was not called “The Voice” for nothing), so this little “Possum”as Jones was nicknamed, affectionately, of course, was eventually compared with “old blue eyes”, because every song that he recorded, either solo, with ex-wife Tammy Wynette, or anyone else, had the “feeling” that nobody could sing like George Jones, God rest his soul.        This is not a 100% correct. As I have indicated several times before, in my articles for eLanka, I do not pick any “You-tube” relevant music clip at random. I do take the trouble of going through dozens of ...

“24 CARAT GOLD” by Des Kelly It is supposed to be a 14 Carat Music Publication, but to me, this is quite definitely a 24 Carat Gold “Country Song”. He is certainly my favourite “Country Singer” at the moment. Seems that NO song he sings could even come under the category of “average”. Again, something very different, from Gene Watson. “(For a little while), I forget you, everyday”. Superb lyrics, from another Icon, Merle Haggard, who recorded the song himself & “appears” in this one, along with yet another favourite of mine, Ray Price, both of whom are now “knocking out the angels” in Heaven’s “Old Opry”, Gene sings this song, as only a “Singer’s Singer” can do. To say that he is a “National Treasure” of America, gives my readers of eLanka a rare insight of how a song must be presented & sung.   Talk until you go ...

The Drink – 3D – By Desmond Kelly My dear eLanka readers, one & all, this “video-clip” featured for your enjoyment (only), is not 3 dimensional. However, forget the foreign “lingo” imprinted on this Masterpiece and please only remember that my song, recorded a few years ago was the “hit” Wadakaha-sudhiya”, or, “The Drink”, as I “titled” it, for the “kalu-puka Suddhas” who followed me to Australia & then completely forgot the wonderful ” Sinhala-language” after being resident here for about 10 minutes.       “Stop carrying on like a bloody 2 bob watch, Des & tell us your reasons for this brief “title”. “O.k, o.k, men, don’t get your amuday in a knot and I will tell”      “3D” stands for “Dwarf Daniel & Dezabel” (she looks a bit of a Jezabel, but then, who cares?”. Sometimes, even I get my “spelling” wrong !.      The first part ...

WHAT PRICE, MUSIC? – By Des Kelly In one word, “priceless”. Why do we go on about Icons of  “Country Music”?, again, in simple terms, because of “Stars” like Ray Price. A former protege of Hank Williams, Snr. who wrote a special song for his pal Ray, after meeting him and hearing what he (Ray) could do, with a song, Hank wrote “Weary Blues, from waiting”with Ray “chipping in” for good measure. The song, however was ” copyrighted” to Hank.W. Hank Williams & Ray Price formed a partnership which would have lasted, but for the untimely death of Hank, who succumbed to a heart-attack in his limousine, on the way to a “gig”, aged just 29.        Ray Price, although devastated by the death of his pal, carried on writing songs, singing them (and others), married the love of his life, Jane, or Janie, as she was known & remained ...
