SRI LANKA NEWS (MARCH  2024) Compiled by Victor Melder The Headline inflation, as measured by the year-on-year (YoY) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2021=100)1 decreased to 5.9% in February from 6.4% in January 2024. The Central Bank said the increase in the headline inflation is mostly in line with its projections.  It said the Food inflation (YoY) increased to 3.5% in February from 3.3% in January 2024, while the Non-Food inflation (YoY) decelerated to 7% in February from 7.9% in January 2024.  CBSL also said the monthly change of CCPI recorded -0.05% in February due to the combined effect of price decreases of 0.67% observed in the items of Food category and price increases of 0.62% observed in the items of Non-Food category. SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS (MARCH  2024) Compiled by Victor Melder The Cricket Selection Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has named Niroshan Dickwella as a replacement for Kusal Janith Perera for the Twenty20 International (T20I) Series against Bangladesh, which begins on Monday in Sylhet. Perera, who was included in the T20I Squad, will not take part in the series as he is suffering from a respiratory infection. Perera did not join the team, which left for Bangladesh on Thursday. Dickwella will join the team tomorrow, ahead of the first match, which will be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. CCPI Headline inflation, as measured by the year-on-year (Y-o-Y) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2021=100) increased to It said the Food inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 3.3% in January 2024 from 0.3% in December 2023, while the Non-Food inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 7.9% in January 2024 from 5.8% in December 2023. SRI LANKA NEWS (JANUARY  2024) Compiled by Victor Melder Nearly a half of Sri Lanka’s households are adopting livelihood-based coping strategies to buy food, says a recent report published by the World Food Programme. The WFP’s ‘Sri Lanka – Household Food Security Survey: Preliminary Findings, December 2023’ says that 43 percent of households were adopting livelihood-based coping strategies to cope with the lack of adequate food. Borrowing money to buy food and purchasing food on credit were the most commonly adopted strategies, by 27 and 26 percent of households, respectively, says the report, adding that households remain vulnerable to future shocks and stresses. “According to the survey, a high proportion of estate households (80 percent) adopted livelihood-based coping strategies, followed by 50 percent of urban households. SRI LANKA NEWS (DECEMBER  2023) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka’s inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) marginally increased to 3.4 percent in November 2023 from 1.5 percent in October, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Thursday. The CCPI for all items for the month of November 2023 increased to 193.4 from 191.4 in October 2023. The Year on Year inflation of Food Group increased to -3.6 percent in November 2023 from -5.2 in October 2023 and the Year on Year inflation of Non Food Group increased to 6.8 percent in November 2023 from 4.9 percent in the previous month. For the month of November 2023, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was -1.20 percent and the contribution of Non Food items was 4.56 percent. SRI LANKA NEWS – NOVEMBER 2023 Sri Lanka Customs (SLC) has recorded the highest revenue for the month of October compared to previous months within this year, Customs media spokesman Sivali Arukgoda said. He said the SL Customs has earned more than Rs. 109 billion in revenue in October. The major reason for the increase in revenue was streamlining and making the tax collection process more efficient. This year, the total Customs revenue is expected to exceed Rs. 925 billion.
