AUG meeting

3rd General Meeting on SundaySunday 25 August 2019 The 3rd Quarterly Meeting of the Ceylon Society will take place on Sunday 25th August 2019 commencing at 6.30 PM at Pennant Hills Community Centre Hall, Corner Ramsay Road (off Yarrara Road), Pennant Hills. Admission is FREE to all members and, their guests and any others interested, are all welcome to attend.

Arun Abey has over 35 years experience working as a financial adviser and wealth manager for individuals and institutions. He has also worked in academia, and been an entrepreneur and a strategy adviser to some of the world’s largest firms, including being Head of Strategy for the AXA Asia Pacific Group for a decade.

Synopsis of talk: Arun will focus on the reality of being a migrant, with the wealth of familiar culture, colour and tradition in one’s homeland, with extended family and customs, and then the juxtaposition of transition to a completely different culture and way of life. The adaptation which is necessary, with the initial difficulties and traumas of adjustment, particularly for a young person, the protective colouration which may be used, the strategies used to gain acceptance, the acquiring of selfconfidence and the ability to then move beyond the ‘neither here nor there’ stage to the integration and acceptance as a valued member of the country of adoption. This is a narrative that we can all relate to as migrants ourselves. Arun will tie the two strands of Sri Lanka and Australia together, giving it the meaning of what it is to be a migrant and make a successful transition.

Social: After a brief question time period, the usual Social will follow. Those able are requested to kindly bring non-sweet savoury finger food. Please avoid cakes with icing as the general preferences are for plain cakes, sandwiches and savoury pastries. To avoid duplication of food items please contact our Social Convenor Amal Wahab on (02) 9402 7735.
As an alternative, a donation to the CSA to help defray costs could be made at the meeting.
