Dear eLanka,

I am Divya, writing to you on behalf of the University of Technology Sydney, Tamil Sangam (UTSTS)- A student based society that unites together with the common goal of encouraging young people to get involved in activities to maintain the Tamil language and to explore the significance of Tamil culture, arts and traditional values.

It is my pleasure to announce that our Sangam is bringing out our annual charity show in January, KATHAMBAMAALAI – கதம்பமாலை  2018. Furthermore, Kathambamalaai will be showcased as a theatrical production, ‘அழகியே Marry Me!’ – a romantic comedy DANCE-DRAMA (Please see event poster in the attachment). This show will be a night of dance, drama and music performed by local talents and Sydney youths.

All proceeds from this event will go towards supporting the charity efforts and patchworks executed by Wisdom projects in Mangalam Sri Lanka. These projects were established to develop an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to humanitarian aid to promote health, education and income creating initiatives to marginalised communities in Sri Lanka. For more information about the charity efforts we are supporting, please refer to the attachment.

This is a great opportunity for all of you to encourage and support our endeavours. Please come forward to purchase tickets to support our efforts and enjoy a night to remember.

Tickets can be purchased from members of UTS Tamil Sangam and you can get in touch through UTS Tamil Society FB page https://www.facebook.com/UTSTamilSociety

About UTS Tamil Society

UTS Tamil society is a distinctive student-run non-profit organization, which was founded to preliminarily act as a networking society for Tamil students at UTS, and promote the diverse culture of Tamil. However, with the years of its execution, UTS Tamil society has amplified its vision and workings. Today, UTS Tamil society aims to uplift multiculturalism at UTS and help create lifelong relationships between the members from different backgrounds.

UTS Tamil Society was established in 1989 with the aim of ensuring that Tamil students have an avenue to maintain and showcase their language and culture whilst remembering those lost in the struggle in Tamil Eelam.

We believe that language is an important part of everyday life and it helps build relationships, understanding and provides us with an advantage that should always be cherished and preserved.  We unite together with the common goal of encouraging young people to get involved in activities to maintain the Tamil language and to explore the significance of Tamil culture, arts and traditional values

Every year UTS Tamil Society brings many events such as cultural gatherings, sporting events, dinner & dance nights as well as volunteer programs to establish platforms for the Tamil community to embrace and strengthen relationships within the Tamil community. The ultimate focus of these events is to promote and preserve the language of Tamil among people of the past, present & future generations. These efforts have been seen as a way to teach youngsters and children about the importance of the role to be played by Tamil youth in western countries to contribute to the struggle back home.

Our annual charity event ‘Kathambamaalai’ has been our continuous production since 2000 and ceased in 2012 due to lack of funding and Tamil student involvement. After a long break, UTS Tamil Society was re-established in 2015 to bring back the production with the aim and vision of commemorating the efforts of the past members of the UTS Tamil Society, and to continue and contribute to promoting Tamil language and culture.

Some of the proceedings contributed to charity organisations through our events include:

  • Kathambamaalai 2005 (Raised funds for the tsunami victims of Sri Lanka)
    • Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation
  • Kathambamaalai 2006 (Raised funds to support an orphanage)
    • Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation
  • Kathambamaalai 2011 (Raised funds for humanitarian projects in Sri Lanka)
    • Tamcare
  • Sangamam 2016 (Raised funds for Chennai flood victims in affiliation with Australia Tamil Association who delivered the proceedings to Chennai through ‘Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam’)
  • Kathambamaalai 2017 (Raised funds for the Palmera Project in conjunction with Vanni Rehabilition PTY)

Purpose of the event:

The principal purpose of ‘Kathambamaalai 2018’ is to showcase the abundant talent and culture of the Tamil student population through a spectacular night of performing arts. This event will entail a sensational dance-drama production, Azhagiye Marry Me, (அழகியே Marry Me!) run entirely by Tamil University students in support of charity projects aiding the betterment of Tamil communities in need. Additionally, this event is being organized to commemorate the vision and efforts of UTS Tamil Society’s past members by reviving the tradition of annual ‘Kathambamaalai’ productions. Through this public event, our society also hopes to do our part in contributing towards the awareness and promotion of Tamil language and culture in Sydney.

Kathambamaalai 2018 will be a night of fascinating cultural performances and absolute entertainment, which will showcase the rich culture of dance, music and drama practiced in the Tamil language. This event aims to become a beautiful platform for upcoming young talents of the local Tamil community, where they can communicate their creativity, passion and individuality through Tamil arts and performance.

Through this event we would also like to strengthen the relationship between Tamil students of various Universities and schools across Sydney; and celebrate the union and collaboration between Tamil societies through multi arts and creations. *

Furthermore, this event will also cater as a source for raising funds and resources in support of the charity and rehabilitation efforts being executed by the C3 CCA church’s Wisdom Project. The Wisdom Project is a child sponsorship project working in Mankulam, Sri Lanka to support young children in need with necessities such as day school centres, meals, uniforms and a sound education. All proceedings from Kathambamaalai will contribute towards the Wisdom project’s work in Mankulam; for more details on this project, please refer to Appendix 2.
