SAINTS QUADRANGULAR IN MELBOURNE ON 28 JANUARY – TOM DEEN TO ATTEND AS THE CHIEF GUEST

Saints Quad

One of the living legends of Antonian sport, Tom Deen, will grace the Saints Quadrangular tournament in Melbourne as the Chief Guest. He has graciously accepted the invitation to fly in from Sydney especially for the occasion.

Tom was part of the Antonian team that played in the inaugural tournament way back in 1963 (in Sri Lanka), under the captaincy of another legend, Harry Jayasundera. This team also included stalwarts like ACM Lafir and Ranjith Samarasekera.

St Benedict’s College, who celebrated their Diamond Jubilee in 1963, had invited all schools in the country for a cricket tournament, but coincidently it was only St Peter’s, St Joseph’s and St Anthony’s that were present for the contest. Old Antonian the late Ranjith Samarasekara was instrumental in convincing the four schools to continue this tournament as an annual event, thus establishing the Saints’ Quadrangular Tournament.

The popularity of the Saints Quadrangular has grown over the years to a level where we now have annual tournaments in a number of countries, including two in Australia (Melbourne and Sydney).

I call upon all Antonians living in Melbourne to come along with your families and support the event. See attached for all the details. Our team will be led by Marlon Von Hagt and will also include two other past skippers, Sahan Palihakkaraand Mohammed Alfar, and the dashing all-rounder Tyrone de Silva.

On the subject of OBA cricket, our annual encounter against Trinity is scheduled for Sunday 17th March at Sweeney Reserve, Narre Warren.
