PICASSO OF PRINT – Gamini Weerakoon – by Joe Van Langenberg With the sad passing of former ‘Island’ Newspaper Editor Gamini Weerakoon, the Fourth Estate, which he had enriched and nurtured over many decades, has lost a huge chunk of its very soul; leaving it’s heart bleeding, wounded, while refusing to come to terms with the harsh reality, that one of its most valued members has crossed over. Mr Weerakoon was the consummate journalist; a stickler for perfection, who had a flair for creativity and an eye for the minutest detail. He was without a doubt, the Picasso of Print. Never one to stand on ceremony, Mr Weerakoon despite been a journalistic Gulliver among Lilliputians, never believed that he was above and beyond any of his colleagues. Unassuming, understanding, empathetic and approachable at all times, Mr Weerakoon mentored many aspiring young scribes along the way. Most of them cut their ...

VICTIM OF MAJOR POLITICAL CHICANERY: by Joe Van Langenberg Despite been demonised, dehumanised, belittled and made a victim of major political chicanery, merely for upholding the sacrosanct tenets of cherished democracy, Founder of Wikileaks and valued member of the prestigious Fourth Estate Julian Assange, has soldiered on with the minimum of fuss or froth. Gaining sanctuary in the Ecuadorean Embassy back in June of 2012, Julian Assange clung to the hope that the United States will not pursue its demand to have him extradited to the U.S. to face charges of compromising highly classified information, by allegedly leaking documents relating to the goings-on in Afghanistan and Iraq; in addition to exposing highly charged diplomatic cables; some of which were reportedly encrypted.. Whether these claims can be given any credence, or whether they have been a matter of conjecture, remain anyone’s wild guess. After been holed up within the confines of ...

“MERLE HAGGARD” – By Des Kelly     In addition to the great “post” of my good friend Joe Van Langenberg, who certainly knows his business as both a writer and reviewer of our Show Business personalities World-wide, I do feel that many thousands of eLanka members and readers (World-wide, as well), absolutely love this Country Icon, who died suddenly and sadly  on his 79th birthday.           As far as I am concerned, everyone knows that while I am a Fanatic for good Music of all kinds, my forte’ however, was, and always will be, Country Music, and again, Music of certain eras only. Country Music or Hill-Billy Music, as it was first known, was passable, I suppose, but only because it produced some superb, special instrumentalists who could make their favourite instruments “talk”. The only Vocalist/Songwriter of the 30’s & 40’s who was outstanding in ...

“VALE’ CHRIS GREET” – By Des Kelly It is with great sadness that I inform all members of eLanka of the passing of not just a very good friend, but also of someone who was a true legend of our beautiful Motherland, Sri Lanka. There were only a very few Sri Lankans of this halcyon era in Lanka that that didn’t know Chris, be it even only his dulcet tones on Radio Ceylon, if not personally. The era I write about was during the 1950’s. We were both young & carefree, Chris, just a few years older than me owned a second-hand Mayflower car, in which he would pick me up in order to attend a few rehearsals of my song Dreamworld, and on the way, the car would inevitably break down, and Chris would then get out, kick the closest tyre and say to me, “don’t worry Desmond, she ...
