Beautiful Sigiriya full of mysteries – By Nadeeka – eLanka Sigiriya is one of the best places to see many people who come to Sri Lanka every year. In 1980, UNESCO named Sigiriya a national world heritage, and Sigiriya is also known as the 8th wonder of the world. Even today, there are many things that could not be solved about the technology of Sigiriya. There are historical stories about Sigiriya. According to grant history, the Sigiriya kingdom is more than 1500 years old. But archaeological evidence suggests that it may have been alive more than 5000 years ago. The height of Sigiri rock is only 180 meters. Due to this height, the kingdom of Sigiri gained great advantages. The point of this grant is the difficulty for enemy irregulars to attack this kingdom. The other thing is the ability to easily inspect the entire environment. It was easier to ...

MICHELANGELO OF ITALY and BARANA OF SRI LANKA-BY Sampath Fernando Source:Island “Every block of stone has a statue inside and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” – Michelangelo (AD 1475-1564). And he discovered THE DAVID inside a rock of marble around AD 1501-1504. Barana, the Sri Lankan sculptor, performed a similar act in the 5th Century AD. He was supposed to have accomplished this around 455-477 AD during the reign of King Dhatusena. Avukana is a standing statue of the Buddha near Kekirawa in the North Central province of Sri Lanka. THE WORLD HERITAGE SITES OF SRI LANKA-By Everyman SIGIRIYA – THE CITADEL IN THE SKY Source:Island From patricide to a palace. From intrigue to ignominy. From paintings to poems. From pleasure gardens to a playboy king. Sigiriya has it all. Archaeology, history, controversy and folklore are entwined and enmeshed in the unfolding of the story of Sigiriya. Sigiriya or ‘Sinhagiri‘ – ‘Lion Rock’ derives its name from the huge rock carved lion located on a small plateau on the Northern side of the rock. Over the decades the top part of this lion has fallen apart and today only the two mammoth front paws are visible forming an entrance between them. The rock itself is the remains of hardened lava which would have pushed through the ground surface causing a volcanic eruption. According to geologists this could have happened over two billion years ago. Around Sigiriya there still can be ...

Kumaradhatusena – the great unknown – By Bernard VanCuylenburg PROLOGUE   “Cometh the hour cometh the man” from John Chapter 4 Verse 23 in the Holy Bible, signifies that the right man will arrive at the right time. However, I may stand corrected on this, as there are varying interpretations of this saying. But it is an appropriate introduction to a great unknown in Lanka’s ancient history who is seldom spoken about, unlike some of the better known heroes of Sinhala royalty. Prince Kumara Dhatusena in his brief reign of nine years ruled the island with a firm but just hand and won the loyalty of his subjects by his meritorious deeds. Sadly, after his death there followed a period of violence, greed, treachery and murder, so often a feature in ancient Lanka’s history and in the history of many lands. His name in the chronicles is recorded as one ...

PORTRAIT OF A KING (Parts 1 & 2) – By Bernard VanCuylenburg Introduction to the article by Des Kelly……. He is just a little tardy, on this subject, but peruse, as I might, I could not find a song dedicated to King Dhatusena, the “Warrior King” of ancient Lanka. Instead, I have chosen a song by Keerthi Pasquel, about the “Portugeesi-karaya”, who invaded Sri Lanka long after Dhatusena had achieved Nirvana (hopefully). Keerthi Pasquel would have to be one of the finest Sinhalese Vocalists in Sri Lanka right now. He sounds superb, no matter what he sings, writes his own songs, also plays bass, lead & rhythm, probably has some Royal blood in his veins, and as far as I am concerned, might even be a direct “Descendant of Dhatusena”  Who knows ?, but read Bernard’s article folks. As usual, it is superbly written. Bernard’s ancestors, the Dutch, took over ...

Here he is, Ladies & Gentlemen, the BEST “Country” Singers, singing two beautiful songs, relevant to the superb article by Bernard VanCuylenberg. Please listen to the lyrics & the way he sings every song he has ever recorded. They might be love-songs, but, to me, he is singing of everyone we have chosen to forget. Pardon me, but this is for all our “Unsung Heroes”   Desmond Kelly.   Star of eLanka.   (Editor-in-Chief) When Wilhem Geiger translated The Mahavamsa and The ...
