He met Margot, a Speech and Drama Teacher, when he was taking part in plays for the Wendy Whatmore School. (The makings of a beautiful rom.com movie plot!) Margot and Davenal were married in December 1971 at St Lawrence’s Church, Wellawatte, Sri Lanka. Three months later, in February 1972, they migrated to Brisbane, Australia. Davenal and Margot are immensely proud of their three children, Michael, Simone, and Jaan and their nine grand children. Davenal began his working life in Australia as an Accounts Clerk in Steelmark. His long years of part-time study at the University of Queensland saw him achieve a degree in accounting and the status of CPA. ...

Vale a true sporting legend of Sri Lanka and St Peters, our dear friend Royden De Silva – By Lawrence Machado Royden passed away in Colombo on Saturday, December 18. after a brave battle with cancer, and other health issues. Royden, who grew up at Harmers Avenue, Wellawatte, was a star on and off the field, famously playing two finals in one afternoon in the Seventies, and winning both: for Havelocks Sports Club, and Orients basketball club. He was a gentle giant, who will be sorely missed by all who played and loved sports, and also those of us who were fortunate to have Royden as a close friend. We were fellow parishioners at St Lawrence’s Church, Wellwatte, in addition, to be alumni of St Peter’s (though years apart), but I really got to know Royden very well during our days in Dubai. Vale Mario Pieris, who lived a full life – By Lawrence Machado Vale dear friend, Mario Pieris. I cannot believe you are gone so soon. You were always the cheeky but reliable altar server at St Lawrence’s Church, Wellawatte. Father of four, Mario, died peacefully in a Seattle hospital yesterday. We served many times together for the daily, Sunday, Christmas, Easter, and feast days, which were so special to us. You were the very popular bell ringer when we went for our Madhu pilgrimage with St Lawrence’s in the seventies. You were later the handsome charmer and talented sportsman at St Lawrence’s youth club before going on to be a flamboyant rugby star, helping St Joseph’s College, Colombo, re-establish themselves as a highly-respected side.
