When St. Peters of Adelaide toured Ceylon in January 1928-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis St. Peters College in Adelaide is an elite boys public school that has produced several Prime Ministers of South Australia and schooled many prominent figures in Australian life.  The school’s cricket team chose to tour Ceylon in the month of January 1928 and played matches against Royal College, S. Thomas’ College and Trinity; and also against a team of planters at the grounds in Darrawella in the hill country. Image Source:Thuppahis The scoring book is part of the school archives and so too a photograph of the whole squad intermingled with the Thomian squad.  This picture can be considered a “treasure” because of the personnel embraced therein: notably Canon de Saram (then Vice-Principal of S. Thomas);  one Dudley S. Senanayake (who became one Ceylon’s Prime Ministers); Richard Hermon (captaining S. Thomas); Robert Senanayake (later a President of the Board of Control for Ceylon Cricket in the 1950s ...

BAMBALAPITIYA FLATS IN THE SWINGING SIXTIES ‘N’ SEVENTIES – By Asiff Hussein Source : Ceylon Then / Sri Lanka Now Bambalapitiya Flats was the place to be back then, as any good ole’ Bamba boy or girl will tell you. Built in the 1950s, the 16 blocks of buildings between Galle Road and the Indian Ocean comprised of two to four storeys built in such a way that the balconies gave a splendid view of the sea to the west. The blocks back then were colour coded for easy identification, with gelati colours like yellow, orange, pink, sky blue, lime green, and sandstone brown giving life to the scheme, especially in the evening when the golden orange orb of the sun set in the sea and bathed the flats with a beautiful sundown glow. The flats were meant to nurture community life with all sharing a common space that included a ...

The first winning Peterite Cager team – By James Alagaratnam  It’s been 60 years since. When five friends won it all at the inter-school basketball championships. (The 1963 All-Island Basketball Champions, St. Peter’s).                              Noting with pride, the current successes of St. Peter’s at the interschool basketball championships, I felt it appropriate, to write of the first championship team of college in 1963. We won it all. My interest in Basketball started at Junior level, grade 6 or 7 when older brother Stephen was playing for the college team, coached by – Mr. Jackie van Twest- of the tutorial staff(inset). The courts were at the north east corner of then grounds, running parallel with Davidson Road. The north perimeter walls bounded two houses that belonged to the Wiratunga’s and the Chandraratne’s. Lynn and brothers, Daya and Tissa ...

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THAT PETERITES STARTED BEFORE THE JOSEPHIANS – Algi Wijewickrema St. Peter’s College was launched as St. Joseph’s College, Colombo South by Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc, the visionary Rector of St. Joseph’s College in 1922 and obviously sports and many other extracurricular activities were introduced by St. Joseph’s from early years. Two examples are Cricketers studying at St. Peter’s playing for St. Joseph’s College up until a separate team represented St. Peter’s in 1927 and Football launched at St. Peter’s in 1925 while it was still St. Joseph’s College Colombo South. Although it is obvious that this should be the natural order of things, as St. Peter’s progressed as a College independent of St. Joseph’s after 1927, there are at least three activities that St. Peter’s College introduced before its brother school. This should not come as a surprise to anyone, least of all to Peterites as their ...
