Former Wallaby Stirling Mortlock’s Lankan Rupee winner – By Trevine Rodrigo in Melbourne Source : pressreader Former Australian Wallabies skipper Stirling Mortlock has always had a knack for finding his way to the try line either by deception or sheer determination. But his other talent is the ability to pick a winner from nothing much like his illustrious Rugby exploits when he came up with an unlikely winner picking ‘Lankan Rupee’ on Oaks Day at the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival much to the delight of his Sri Lankan mate at the Melbourne Rebels, Rugby convener, Hish Fernando. Mortlock is an open admirer of Sri Lanka, its people and hospitality and its talent in rugby which he savoured recently for the first time during a visit to the Island for the Carlton Rugby Sevens with other officials from the Melbourne Rebels. The former Rebels Captain and now board member of Australia’s newest ...

Another Christmas greeting! – By Reeves Neydorff (sent to eLanka by Trevine Rodrigo) Finished the chores. Trying to keep a lid on things. Chrissie night still needed some burning off! The sea was calming but still showed a swell from the depression now in the middle of the Arabian sea. But it will calm down, as it goes west, and nothing else to talk about except some equatorial convection to the East. Some clouds gathering for a late night local. It was One heavy meal with meat and sea food, and mono-bi-and tri-carbs and all the  trappings, cheese off-course for the mixed pasta (Took me more than an hour before I munched  my way through it, but  anyone knows, I never leave a plate, with residue ,and with some garlic bread, wiped the platter clean, easy to wash up after) followed by a Heavy duty, two loads of dessert, with ...

Prashanth Sellathurai, the pride of Sri Lanka for Australia – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE The insatiable hunger for success cannot be suppressed in some minds, and one of those with this rare quality is Prashanth Sellathurai, despite his outstanding academic success. Not satisfied with his credentials as a practising doctor, the 36-year-old has pushed himself to boundaries far exceeding a healthy regimen among mere humans to establish himself as one of the best Australian gymnasts earning him an  induction to Hall of Fame appreciation among sportsmen in New South Wales. From a Sri Lankan perspective it is an honour to have a dedicated participant that has brought honour and success at the highest level in a sport that has only produced two world class performers for Australia. Prashanth’s parents are medical professionals and he is the seed that did not fall far from.the tree. But he superseded it with ...

The launch of Sri Lanka Rugby legends, took off at the Walawwa in Melbourne – By Trevine Rodrigo The launch of Sri Lanka Rugby legends, took off at the Walawwa in Melbourne. The new concept of ex rugby players from all clubs in Sri Lanka is a refreshing idea and the brainchild of Shehan Wijewardena of the Walawwa an ex CH &FC and CR &FC player . The initial get together featured some absolute legends of the calibre of Lorenz Pereira, Noel Brohier, Reggie Bartholomews and several other former stars. It has the makings of a great idea that gives birth to a gathering of a fraternity that provided Sri Lanka with entertainment on and off the rugby field. Kelvin and Vanessa Speldewinde and their band Pressure Drop provided the entertainment. Kelvin Speldewinde was himself a former star turning out for Havelock’s as a speedy winger and Sri Lanka Colts ...

Sri Lanka’s batters find form to thwart Afganistan charge – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Sri Lanka’s batters found fluency at long last and it made the difference between saving face, and humiliation, as they sealed a pulsating 4 wicket win with two balls remaining against Afghanistan,  to level the series.  On a Pallekelle track that showed few terrors, Afghanistan led by prolific run machine Ibrahim Zadran who smashed a dominant 162 off 138 balls took them to an imposing target of 313. Zadran was joined by Najibullah Zadran 77 Off 76 balls with the Afgans shaky at 57 fo 3 to lead a fantastic recovery.  But it was not to be their day of glory.  Even the return to form by Rashid Khan who grabbed 4 for 31 in his spell wasn’t sufficient to turn the tide Afghanistan’s way as the Sri Lankan batsmen went on a rampage to ...

Afganistan conquer the hills of Pallekelle – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Afganistan exposed Sri Lanka’s pathetic standing in world cricket with a ruthless annihilation of the home team at Pallekelle.  The visitors showed no qualms about the opposition or the unfamiliarity of Sri Lankan conditions batting with authority and treating the Sri Lanka attack with disdain to post a imposing 294 for 8 in their allotment.  They then clinically dissected and demolished the now established Sri Lanka batting inconsistency, mainly in the middle order,  which has been a contentious issue for quite a while, to coast to a easy 60-run win.  They bowled the hapless Lankans out in just 34 overs. Only Pathum Nissanka, 85 off 83 balls, and Wanindu Hasarsnga De Silva, 66 off 46 balls showed enough class and aggression to take the challenge to the visitors and save them of more embarrassment and blushes. On ...

Australia destroys England euphoria with a one-day hiding.- BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) England were drowned by the  T20 World Cup success and found swimming in the waters of euphoria does not translate to continued success.   Well, Australia made that wake up call.  Recovering from the hangover of a fantastic and unexpected World Cup glory, England found that maintaining that aura was about focus and consistency.  Australia reminded them that it was built around continued focus which the triumphant Englishmen found they were caught out in a program planned on maintaining status quo. It also brings into focus that Australia is never off the radar as the most fierce competitor in world cricket, also in most sports in the world.  The one-day whitewash clearly demonstrated the frivolous nature of the white ball game and gives hope to all competing nations in the next edition of the World Cup.  ...

England shatter Pakistan dream to prevail in gripping T20 World Cup final – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) England skipper Jos Buttler marshalled his troops with the command of a cool ,calm, battle hardened veteran to contain an established Pakistan batting line-up. He then led his men to an emphatic T20 World Cup victory in front of over 80 thousand fans at the MCG.  As I said in my preview,  winning the toss was paramount. It gave England the platform to play to their strengths by putting Pakistan in and trying to strangle a free scoring team in an endeavour to chase down a reasonable target.  Man-of- match,  and the series, Sam Curran, provided that impetus with a devastating spell of seam bowling on an MCG track that was rwo paced and with plenty of swing off it. Curran and leg spinner Adil Rashid ripped through Pakistan ...

Pakistan pace quartet stand between winning and losing their first T20 World Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sport Editor)   Shaheen Shah Afridi leads a Pakistan pace quartet that can dismantle England’s batting line-up and their chances of snatching this edition of T20 World Cup.  England looked invincible against India,  chasing a par total. But they will be challenged if Pakistan wins the toss and invite them to have a first go with the bat.  Pakistan have a lethal pace combination that can destroy the best batting line-ups in the world, and a two paced MCG will give them the impetus to achieve just that  backed by serious options with spin. Pakistan’s batting has proved second to none.  Skipper Barbar Azam leads a talented line-up that can score freely on their day. The return of Afridi after missing tha Asia Cup, has given them that extra edge ...
