Coomarawel was a top class cyclist, but what captured the hearts of all cycling fans was the fact that he was a fine gentleman cyclist. He will be remembered for ever. Maurice took to cycling in a big way in 1958. He studied at Arethusha College, Wellawatte and rode for Spartan Wheelers and for Winged Wheel Cycling Club, Colombo.
