He was the youngest son of Dr. Louis Gerard Blazé and his wife Claribel Louise Blazé (nee Arndt). Vivian was educated at St Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia where he excelled at sport, captaining the athletics and swimming teams. After matriculating in 1948, he pursued his sporting interests with energy, competing in various national athletic meets as a member of the Ace Athletic Club. Vivian then proudly represented Ceylon at the 1950 British Empire Games in Auckland – his event was the 440-yard hurdles – only six months after taking up a planting job with Scottish Tea and Lands.
