The Rajeewa Jayaweera I Knew Source:-island For a fleeting period, Air Lanka (before its change to SriLankan) lit up the Oman sky, but it was all too brief, as was the life of the initiator of this success. We commemorate the first death anniversary of Rajeewa Jayaweera and recall with pride the achievements of this dynamic individual who left a significant imprint of Sri Lanka’s landscape among those living in the gulf states. As a journalist my association with Rajeewa spanned over a decade in the nineties. He was a “stoic and principled” administrator who was forthright and considered in his views. As Manager of the Sri Lankan airline in Oman, he delivered exceptional service not only to our community in many ways over the period of his tenure, but also to those Gulf travelers visiting our island. Nimal Perera – Senior Chartered Architect and Interior Designer by Clifford Lazarus – New Zealand   Source:-island Nimal Perera (aka KNP) has died after a heroic battle with cancer surrounded by many friends and his family as he bade farewell. The talented Interior Designer, whose artistic work adorns many royal households in the Sultanate of Oman was a soul who blazed so brightly. Humble, charming and unassuming, Nimal twinkled like a star to leave a lasting legacy and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. The livewire at any gathering, he lived life to the fullest, remembered for his kind and meritorious acts. Much sought for his talents in singing and mimicry, his hilarious impersonations of “Amaris Aiya” of Sri Lanka’s “Nandana Vindana” comedies regaled party-goers. There was never a dull moment in Nimal’s company. Supported and backed by his childhood sweetheart and wife, Jayanthi, Nimal was at ...

Cricket in the desert by Clifford Lazarus It was late in the evening, March 17, 1975, when former Nationalised Services and ex-Josephian cricketer, Sunitha Goonetilleke, looked anxiously to the skies for the first-ever Air Ceylon Avro charter to arrive in Oman carrying 73 Sri Lankans.    Passionate about cricket, Sunitha arrived in Oman in 1973, joined by another pioneer and ex-Air Ceylon colleague, Padma Leanage. Stationed at the Seeb International Airport,  Sunitha made friends with cricket-crazy Afzal Chaudry from Pakistan, whose duty was to meet staff recruited for construction firm, Skanska.  Finding common ground in the sport, the two gentlemen laid the foundation for the first-ever cricket tournament to be launched in the Sultanate – the Skanska Cup!   Sunitha teamed with other airline and airport staff including the late Michael Raj (former Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year and ex-St Anthony’s College, Katugastota) whose brother, Charles (fondly known as CPP Raj ex-BRC), also in Oman at the time and played for ...
