Massive cache of heroin, ‘Ice’ intercepted off Galle… Source:Sri Lanka Navy Sri Lanka Navy on Thursday (Jan.04) intercepted a multiday fishing trawler carrying more than 245kg of heroin and crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’) valued over Rs. 3,190 million, approximately 28 nautical miles (50km) in seas west of Hikkaduwa. Upon searching the trawler, more than 189kg (including packages) of ‘Ice’ stuffed into 130 parcels and around 55kg (including packages) of heroin in 48 packages were recovered. Additionally, 06 Sri Lankan nationals aboard the fishing trawler were arrested. The seized items and the suspects were subsequently brought ashore to the Galle Harbour and were handed over to the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) for onward legal action. He writes that upon entering the area he saw, of all things, a rock python, which upon seeing the visitor uncoiled its fold and passes through the fence into the neighbouring enclosure. Tennent recounts how, in 1587, the Portuguese, “hoping to create a diversion”, attacked several villages in this part of the coast and then shipped the peasants as slaves to India. History tells us that the residents of these areas of the country did not easily acquiesce to such treatment; so formidable were the residents of Ambalangoda that they formed the bulk of the porowakarayo or axe-wielders under the King.
