Two Majestic ‘cameos’ in Cricket from Dhoni and Pathirana-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Amidst the hot news in Australia relating to the knife-wielding nutcase and his killings at Bondi in Sydney, I watched snatches of the web-reportage on the match between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Superkings (CSK) in the IPL tournament.  The latter event was high-scoring, topsy-turvy, turbulent and fascinating. In point-form let me highlight some remarkable performances. A: Batting first CSK amassed a reasonable total even though Daryll Mitchell’s faltering innings at the end  slowed them down till he was dismissed in the last over …And then ….. B: Mahendra Singh Dhoni walked in to face the last few balls. Though the match was at Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai, this Indian Maharaja was not deterred; he smacked three huge sixers in the four balls he faced. All hailed His Majesty Dhoni. C: Undeterred, Rohit Sharma (the former captain of the Mumbai team) unfolded ...

Hasaranga, Ranaweera in ICC T20I teams of the year Source:Dailymirror All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga and left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera were the only Sri Lankans named in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) men’s and women’s teams of the year respeectively, announced today.  Hasaranga was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup victory earlier in the year before also being among the leading wicket takers at the T20I World Cup 2022, while Ranaweea finished 2022 with 27 wickets in 19 T20Is, averaging 13.85 and conceding runs at an economy rate of 5.75. England’s T20I World Cup 2022 winning skipper Jos Buttler was named as captain of the Men’s Team of the Year, with the Player of the Tournament Sam Curran also being included.  ...

Dates announced for India’s tour of Sri Lanka-by Rex Clementine Source:Island India will send a second string team to Sri Lanka later this month for a six-match bilateral series. The teams will be involved in three ODIs and three T-20 Internationals with all games taking place in a bio-secure bubble at RPS. It is unlikely that spectators will be accommodated for the series due to current rising numbers of COVID cases. RPS underwent extensive renovation recently and hasn’t hosted a game in two years. India have made tremendous progress in the game in the last ten years that they are able to send their main team to England, that too an extended squad and then send a second string team that looks not too bad on paper to Sri Lanka. IPL has opened up a whole lot of new opportunities for India. ...
