I was in the Daily News newsroom doing the night shift, with the television tuned into CNN as usual. I was horrified by what I saw – two hijacked passenger planes hitting the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. Although initially there was some confusion as to whether a “stray” passenger plane may have hit the WTC, CNN and the wire services such as Reuters and AFP later confirmed our worst fears – it was the biggest terrorist attack ever on US soil and indeed, anywhere in the world.
