Both hail from a sporting family. Iswans father A.H.K. Omar was a fine cricketer and led St. Anthonys College in 1928 and later played for Kandy Sports Club and Central Province. He was a fine all-rounder, a medium pace bowler and a hard-hitting batsman. He was also a superb cover point fielder. Iswan started his rugby at Trinity College under the guidance of Hilary Abeyratne and first played for the under 15 side as a prop forward and as a second-row forward for the under 17. How two ‘cricket clubs’ shaped the face of rugby-BY HAFIZ MARIKAR Dickoya-Maskeliya Cricket Club, the first to play rugby Source:Sundayobserver The first ever club rugby game to be played in the country was between two Up-Country clubs, Dickoya Maskeliya Cricket Club and Dimbula Athletic and Cricket Club. This match was played on September 7, 1880 with Dickoya Maskeliya CC represented by planters wining the game by 9 points to 3 at Darawella. The return game took place a week later at Radella and Dimbula A & CC came out as winners by three points to nil. Unfortunately, sad to say, today these two clubs are out of the game. Maralanda first played rugby for his school in 1956 under the guidance of late Col. Bertie Dias and the leadership of DN Frank and that year Trinity was rated as the best school team.
