Galba’s Tales of Parliamentary Affairs from the Inside: “Wow”!-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Hugh Karunanayake, … with the title and the highlighting being impositions by The Editor, Thuppahi Nihal Seneviratne, the former Secretary General of Sri Lanka’s Parliament which he served with distinction and diligence for 33 years, has published his autobiographical memoir entitled “Memories of 33 years in Parliament”.  Written in a very readable, chatty style of prose, it is indeed a compendium of the highlights of the nation’s legislative workings over the past three decades.  If anyone dares to call the nation’s Parliament a “circus”, then surely the Secretary General, together with the Speaker  must be the “ringmasters’ of the circus! It is most definitely a vantage point from which a person appointed under the Constitution of the country, as Secretary General of Parliament, could view the inner dynamics of the workings of an institution entrusted by the people to guide the destinies ...

He is our pre-eminent author on forensic subjects. His work on the Sathasivam and the Vicarage murders have won acclaim for their fine expression of forensic and legal knowledge. What is most valuable is his account of the political and social background of this troubled period that culminated in this assassination. The transitional 1990s and beyond (JVP-III)-by Rajan Philips Source:Island If the 1980s were tumultuous, the 1990s were more transitional, even if not less tumultuous. In this ‘potted’ history, it is not necessary to recount all the details of the 1990s and the first decade of the new 21st century. Suffice it to focus on developments that have had a continuing influence on current events and the farce of 2021. The UNP and the JVP, which more or less came together in 1977, were gone by 1994, after seventeen years of assorted achievements. The UNP would never return to the same pinnacle of power that it seized in 1977. The JVP with a new generation of leaders transformed itself into a democratic political party with mixed results. The first half the decade saw the disintegration of the UNP under the weight of the presidential ambitions of three rival contenders – President ...

LALITH ATHULATHMUDALI, A COLOSSUS SORELY MISSED by Krishantha Cooray I am told that a crowd of people had stood by the statue at the corner where Rajakeeya Mawatha meets Kumaratunga Munidasa Mawatha around 10.30 this past Saturday the 26th of November, 2016. The statue had been garlanded, apparently. It’s impossible to tell if those who passed by knew what it was all about. We can’t tell if those who pass that junction on a daily basis know whose statue it is if indeed they had even noticed it. That’s how it is. Time passes, monuments once new and people once fresh in one’s memory, blend into the landscape and into the long history of a nation respectively and they are no longer noticed or remembered. The man thus commemorated was Lalith Athulathmudali. To put it all in perspective, even I who knew him well, had no idea that such an ...
