CEYLON’S SOLITARY SILVER MEDAL-by ECB Wijeyasinghe Source:Island Thanks to a satellite in the firmament, the Moscow Olympiad is now viewed in armchair comfort even in the middle-class homes of Sri Lanka. There was a time when admirers of the culture and games of Ancient Greece had to be satisfied with taking Homer to bed and dreaming of Helen of Troy or Ulysses till the crack of dawn. T.V. and other Olympics have changed all that. Owing to their possession of an enormous vocabulary the Greeks had a word for everything and a name for every game under the sun. In the field of athletics, however, they excelled to such an extent that it was the secret ambition of every young man to look like a Greek God. All the classical deities were supposed to be physically perfect with a chiselled grin or grizzled chin according to the specifications of the patrons ...

Obituary – Sampath Ratnatunga (September 8, 1958 – January 15, 2021) – by Lawrence Machado Vale dear friend and classmate Sampath Ratnatunga, whom I knew for more than 55 years, starting from our early days at kindergarten at St Peter’s College.  Friends also knew you as Sammy and Sam. In Sri Lanka, you worked in the travel trade for years, including KLM, but later in Melbourne, you completely changed professions, becoming a professional massage therapist, running your own business, Pascoe Vale Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy from your home, until a few years ago, healing and helping hundreds of people. You then showed your dedication to the medical field by donating your body for medical science. Like many of your friends, I cannot believe you are gone and won’t be there for our regular chats about anything which catches our fancy: from family and friends, to sharing a virtual drink, ...

For Christ’s sake… Australia is a Christian country. We should be proud of that by Lawrence Machado It’s political correctness taken to a ridiculously low level: I am talking about the fixation of the so called politically-correct fun police in Australia who have nothing better to do than tone down anything that is Christmas or Christian-like. A note to the PC fun police: why stop at Christmas? Have a go at the other religious festivals and just call them the holiday season or silly season and see what happens. (Illustration: Getty Images) The strange thing is that none of the so-called objections to Christmas comes from the other religions who not only acknowledge the right of Christians to celebrate the glory of Christ’s birth, but also enjoy the great feeling that Christmas brings. It’s also the end of the year. ...
