Dear X (name withheld for privacy) THE ROYAL COLLEGE THAT NURTURED ME Many thanks for sharing and giving me an opportunity to express my views on a few issues currently concerning my old school. Firstly, I applaud the ex-Principal of RC, Mr. R M M Rathnayake for his subject article https://island.lk/a-former-royal-college-principal-defends-maintenance-of-secular-values-in-the-school/ that partly contributes to us old Royalists becoming aware of current “happenings” at Royal. I believe that I can confidently assume that Mr. Rathnayake is a devout and respected Buddhist and an educationist and Principal par excellence. As such he has the credentials to be seriously considered. On the other hand, you and I being so remote from the scene are really not in a position to be ultra judgemental. I strongly believe that these issues of concern must be brought to the notice of old Royalists. It is then up to each one of us to make our ...

AN EPIC AND INSPIRATIONAL JOURNEY-by LORENZ PEREIRA Source:Island (01 February 2022) I have always felt deeply about the dire plight of the plantation workers and the hopelessness of their lives. I have been concerned and somewhat saddened as to how hard they have to work under the most inhospitable of external conditions for paltry earnings and a life destined to very little hope of betterment. There is little doubt that their lot has been exploited for greater profits of owners. Contrary to the above, I am about to relate the journey of a young boy from this background that inspires hope for all those that see no hope for change and enhancement. I have been mystified over the years at this amazingly exceptional and epic journey and the various heavenly/earthly factors that made it possible. I will leave it to the reader to judge. My father, Prof EOE Pereira, the ...

Big matches forged many friendships off the field-By Sujith Silva Source:Quadrangle My first Royal-Thomian memory goes back to 1953 when Royal College was captained by Ubhaya de Silva; the Thomians were down I think 4 for 14 and then P.I. Peiris and Geoff Wijesinghe put on record partnership of 187 runs. The Thomians went on to win the match by an innings at the Oval. Vijaya Malalasekera and Mano Ponniah opening batting for Cambridge University team 1967 P.I. Peiris was engaged in a fifth-wicket partnership of 187 runs with Geoff Wijesinghe while PI made a fine century of 123 runs, and Wijesinghe contributed with 64 in a total of 290. In 1954, T. Nirmalingam was leading the Royalists and Ranjith (Bar) Weerasinghe led the Thomians. I remember Nirmalingam’s innings of 69 runs. When he was run out for 69, the Royal scoreboard read 70 for 1. He opened with Selvyn ...

Baptist top class ruggerite and coach-by Althaf Nawaz Bryan Baptist Source:Dailynews A person to prosper in life, in any field has to be influenced and guided by someone in life to reach the pinnacle, in that particular segment. Bryan Baptist one of the greatest ruggerites Sri Lanka has ever produced played a pivotal role in developing the game in the country as a player, coach and as an administrator. Bryan was encouraged by a few school mates at Royal College, Colombo who said that “You are strong and have so much of energy, , why don’t you play rugger” to him about six decades ago. He had never seen a rugger match and was taken by two classmates to witness a club match at the Race Course involving CH and FC. The game was so, physical which stunned him, when a player was tackled on the touch line close to ...

A tribute to Brian Pereira By brother Lorenz Pereira. Both outstanding sportsmen from Sri Lanka Remembering Bryan Eustace Bryan Pereira passed away on 3 April 2019 at the age of 78, quite unexpectedly, but peacefully, with dignity and with no fuss in keeping with his gentle character and laconic lifestyle. Bryan operated in a by-gone time capsule setting his own agenda, quite oblivious to the topsy turvy and goings on of the environment around him.He was blessed with simplicity and humility, like his Father, and was unbothered with the triviality of inconsequential occurings of daily life. Indeed a most pragmatic and philosophical path to a contented lifestyle. Bryan was a Man of very few words, but huge on loyalty, honesty and traditional values of good behavior and decency. He had no malice whatsoever, no negative envy of other’s successes, but the absolute opposite, and a true and noble sportsman of ...

SPORTING ROYALTY When Lorenz Pereira reigned supreme Lorenz Pereira captained the Combined College Cricket Team in 1958 Standing L – R: M.L. Idroos (STC), Raja de Silva (SJC), Anton Perera (SPC), Kingsley Fernando (St. Seb C), Priya Perera (SJC), Y. Amaradasa (Ananda), Suranjith Mendis (POW). Seated L – R: Lionel Fernando (SBC), Lorenz Pereira (Royal), L.R. Gunatilleke (Wesley C) and Sarath Samarasinghe (Royal). Eustace Lorenz Pereira could quite easily be regarded as the most outstanding sportsman produced in the 180-year-old history of Royal College, Colombo, an academic institution that can trace its beginnings way back to 1835. As the college song goes “and thence did Lanka’s learning thrive.” Lorenz (Lollo to some), as he is affectionately known, excelled – and that is merely putting it mildly –with five colours in major sports – cricket, rugby, tennis, athletics and, in addition, Public Schools athletics colours. He also captained the Royal cricket ...
