Second in a family of five, he was born in Hasalaka, Randenigala and was educated at the Sangabodhi MV in Morayaya, a rural school in Kandy. At the age of 38, Senanayake made his official debut at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed in two pistol shooting events.
