SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS (DECEMBER  2023) Compiled by Victor Melder Members of the national selection panel are set to be the first casualties post World Cup in which the national cricket team had a disastrous campaign. Despite Sri Lanka finishing ninth in the ten-team event and failing to qualify for the Champions Trophy, none holding key positions within the national cricket team had stepped down. Although previous Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe and other bodies attached to the Sports Ministry were keen to change the selection panel headed by former fast bowler Pramodya Wickremasinghe, there was tough resistance from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Return of Angelo Matthews, the man with the Midas touch transforms Sri Lanka’s fortunes. England perish under new look Sri Lanka. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE(eLanka Sports editor). Angelo Matthews turned out to be Sri Lanka’s new good luck charm and Kusal Mendis warmed to his role as skipper leading the Island nation to a convincing 8 -wicket victory over defending World Cup champions England in Bengaluru.  Shell- shocked England, currently languishing at the bottom of this edition, had no answers to a revitalised Sri Lanka, as Matthews provided the Midas touch, after Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat. Sri Lanka women claim Silver in Asian Games Cricket – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE – (eLanka Sports editor)   Chamari Athapaththu and Sri Lanka can take plenty of pride from a stirling effort at the Asian Games where the plucky Islanders nearly grabbed Gold falling short of knocking off fancied India. The Sri Lankans were gallant in defeat in the final after containing the strong Indian batting line-up to just 116 in a shock that stung one of the best teams in the world.  Chasing what seemed a gettable target, Sri Lanka found the going tough as the Indian bowlers struck back viciously to tie them down to 97 for 8 for a 19-run win. This performance underlines the rapid progress Sri Lanka has been in recent times and augurs well for the women’s game against the best in the world.  It also underlines the series victory over England ...
