This 2 year old boy with a brain tumor needed to attend the main Cancer hospital which was 6 hours away. His mother was unemployed and did not have the means to bring Viku to the hospital. CDF came to the rescue to save his life with multiple trips regardless of the distance, time and cost. Living 200km away from the hospital, Viku’s mother battling poverty in addition to her own health issues was a daunting task. TOURIST ARRIVALS IN THE SAME MOMEMTUM THIS MONTH TOO – By Sunil Thenabadu Source : info-rain Over 50,000 tourist arrivals have been reported within the first ten (10) days of August 2023, Sri Lanka’s Tourism Ministry reported. According to the Tourism Ministry, a total of 51, 594 tourist arrivals have been reported during this period, an increase compared to the same period last year. India is the highest source market with 9,146 tourist arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom with 6,939 tourist arrivals, and China with 3,707 tourist arrivals. France with 3,249 tourist arrivals and Germany with 3,155 tourist arrivals rounds off the top five source markets during the first 10 days of August 2023. Tourist arrivals have also been reported from Italy, Russia, Spain, Netherlands and Canada during this period. “Girihandu Seya” – first Buddhist stupa? – By Arundathie Abeysinghe Girihandu Seya (“Seya” meaning stupa or dagoba) also known as “Nithupathpana Vihara” is an ancient Buddhist Temple in *Thiriyaya in *Trincomalee. Girihandu Seya is considered as the first Buddhist Stupa in Sri Lanka, believed to have been constructed by two seafaring merchants *Tapassu and *Bhalluka. Names of the two merchant bothers are recorded on a rock inscription in the temple premises. According to the inscription, Girihandu Seya was constructed by the guilds of merchants named “Trapassuka” and “Vallika”, Their names were written as “Tapassu” and “Bhalluka” in Sinhala chronicles. Situated on a small hillock near the sea coast, approximately 47 kilometers (29 miles) towards north of Trincomalee, the stupa of the Temple has been enlarged during the 8th century A.D.
