The history of the DSA group – freshmen of 1959 – By Sriyan Jayasekera The history of the Thomian OBA, is akin to an enormous tree that continues to spread its boughs in every direction.  It had its roots in the Banyan grove in Mutual in the northern part of Colombo, where my maternal grandfather Mr D.F.Suraweera (1896-1902) was a student.  That was at the turn of the twentieth century. Later the tree was ‘transplanted’ in a manner, and continued to flourish in the environment of Mount Lavinia, where now, the Thomian impress has been fixed upon one and all, reputedly as “the school by the sea”.         My father the late Mr D,S.Jayasekera (1947-1995) served on the tutorial staff for forty eight years. My personal involvement was directed by an invitation from my cohort to be the de–facto convener of my class group, under the banner, “Freshmen of ’59 – DSA era ...

Sriyan Jayasekera : Promoting Thomian Goodwill Source:stcobasydney   Many of us know the name but given his self effacing nature he has eluded us for a number of years! Not this time Sriyan and we are proud to ‘unmask’ the mystery man behind the Thomian literature, emails, obituary notices and all matters relevant to STC that warrants sharing with the global Thomian community. A ‘Die hard’ who prefers being ‘behind the scenes’ his contribution in spreading the word to ‘Thomians Near and Far’ is well received and appreciated. Likewise every time someone sends him an ‘SOS’ to track someone down or share information , our veritable messenger pigeon, never fails to deliver. The DSA group forum he so meticulously runs speaks volumes of his ardor. Thank You Sriyan, for fostering the links between various sub-groups/OBAs and keeping us close to the Thomian mother ship. We hope, the vignettes we present, ...

Fond memories! The great school by the sea – during a by gone era! Certainly evokes much nostalgia amongst Thomians past and present! They are mainly taken from college magazines and other college publications. Thanks to Sriyan Jayasekera for sending these great images to eLanka. Latest photo that was found was about the Rifle Shooting photo. Before the Rifle Range was put up bordering the De Saram road, the range had been between the main block and the chapel gardens. ...

Das Wijeratne -outstanding corporate leader – by Sriyan Jayasekera It is since one year we note with profound sadness the passing away of D H T Wijeratne popularly known as Das. It is only an outstanding person who will be remembered  many months after his death for what he had done for others and not for him to rise to fame. Was born on 2nd September 1937 and had his entire education at S Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. Some are born great, others achieve greatness and some others have greatness trust upon them, let it be with him. Very loyal old boy of the school. Once at an OBA meeting Warden Anandanayagam introduced him as a Director of a very prestigious company who had come forward to organize the Bishop Chapman Scholarship Fund dinner this year but mentioned he has only two daughters and therefore, no other vested interest at college. He ...
