The Rain in Spain were tears of joy as they snatch a World Cup dream- BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) It was raining tears of joy in Spain as the plucky Spanish pulled off a sensational 1-0 win over a luckless England to lift the World Cup in Sydney. In all fairness, England were fancied to go all the way but found the Spanish women a daunting prospect. It was all Spain for most parts of the game as they launched endless waves of attacks into England territory but were thwarted by a solid defence that could have made the margin more emphatic. England missed what seemed like a gettable equaliser in front of the Spanish goal. But it was ...

A burst bubble and skilful Sweden push the Matildas to fourth – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor) The English burst their bubble 2-1,  but the Matildas although deflated were on a high in the Semi-Final after an arm wrestle against their arch rivals, and it breathed belief that they would clinch third place in the World Cup.  A flamboyant Sweden decided otherwise,  as they stifled and snuffed out home crowd support to claim third place despite the deafening home crowd support with a truly calculated 2-0 win. I was one, among a few million Australians, who firmly believed the Matildas would end on a high after their heartbreaking loss to England.  But it was not to be,  as one of Soccer’s World Cup heavyweights showed skill, flair, and deadly accuracy to kill off any chance of an upset.  While the Matildas fourth place was irrelevant to the ...

Ruthless England break Matildas hearts – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  (eLanka Sports Editor) England were unsympathetic yet professionally switched on as they mercilessly destroyed a Matildas dream to advance to the World World Cup final.  The European Champions were clinical yet ruffled by a spirited home team that gave them a few shivers before pulling away in the last 20 minutes to scramble home 3-1 in an entertaining semi final that at times looked like it could go down to the wire. The Matildas had their chances of making the outcome different,  but England rose to and countered every challenge with forays of their own that was worthy of their eventual dominance and victory.  England lacked the skills of Denmark and France but adopted a cat and mouse strategy against a dangerous underdog, playing with new found confidence and overwhelming home crowd support.  England played with the dominant spirit ...

Chamari Athapaththu smashes New Zealand to a memorable series win in the one-dayers – by TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports Editor) Inspirational skipper makes Sri Lanka proud by soaring to number one in ICC rankings.  Inspirational skipper Chamari Athapaththu fashioned a lone crusade as she made Sri Lanka proud of a first ever one-day series win over New Zealand.  Sri Lanka’s superstar in  the womens game,  carved up the respected  Kiwi attack in the series decider, smashing 140 off 80 balls to literally single handedly decide the decider in an amazing array of strokeplay that left the visitors dumbfounded.  The 2-1 series win was Sri Lanka’s first against a top echelon team in world cricket and those lucky to witness it in Galle will long savour those special memories.  What was more memorable was Athapaththu’s lead from the front scoring two centuries against a proven attack in three games, ...

Jack-in-the-box Sri Lanka storm into World Cup contention – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka overcame the embarrassment of possible elimination in emphatic fashion to seal a spot on the main stage of the upcoming World Cup in India in October.  Poor performances prior to this saw the struggling former World Cup champions and twice runners up relegated to the bottom tier and having to prove themselves worthy of rubbing shoulders with the best.  Dasun Shanaka’s men did just that, spurning the doubters and shoving it up the insensitive critics, as the team jelled when it mattered. Just to set the record straight,  it certainly wasn’t a cakewalk. They were stretched by Scotland and the Netherlands before making the cut, with six wins in as many games.  The last encounter against the shell shocked and demoralised departing West Indies is of academic interest. But if they ...
