The vote on Thursday night was an emphatic win for the 56-year-old, who was born in the United Kingdom to Sri Lankan parents and emigrated to Australia at age seven. Just six months later his father died from a heart attack. The young Kanishka was raised by “a single mother migrant lady in a place where we had no family”.
