Gunathilake was a brilliant volleyball player who represented Sri Lanka, Royal Ceylon Air Force (RCAF) and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) volleyball teams with distinction. He was the first volleyball player from the SLAF to represent the National Volleyball Team.
