Our Parents Showed Us The Way At Christmas And Always – By Lawrence Machado All our lives there is someone telling us what to do, some for our own good,  while others can lead us on the wrong path. Fortunately, in the lives of my six siblings – Axie, Rienzie, Sally, Veronica, Belinda, Fortuna – and I, we had amazing parents and grandparents to guide us on the correct path and instill in us lifelong lessons which hold true to this day. It’s particularly nostalgic to remember our loved ones who are no longer with us during Christmas. My happy Christmas memories in Sri Lanka were all thanks to our parents, Rosario and Margaret Machado, who always made sure the birth of Christ was a special and life-changing moment for all of us. I remember fondly Dad and Mum closing their room door to pack our gifts while there was always ...

Prince was only a few months older than me and we were classmates from kinder to the end and played some sports together at St. Peter’s College. As much as we are devasted at your death, I can only imagine what your beloved wife Srimani, devoted son Gavin Machado, loving daughter-in-law Natasha, your beautiful grandchildren, and much-loved siblings, Sharmini Devotta, Lal and Marini and their families must be feeling. And your delightful dog Coco who gave you so much pleasure. All of us who know you, Prince, are stunned at your sudden passing from our world, but we know that your tremendous faith and courage when facing your battles, kept you going until the end when God called you back into His Arms. Vale a true sporting legend of Sri Lanka and St Peters, our dear friend Royden De Silva – By Lawrence Machado Royden passed away in Colombo on Saturday, December 18. after a brave battle with cancer, and other health issues. Royden, who grew up at Harmers Avenue, Wellawatte, was a star on and off the field, famously playing two finals in one afternoon in the Seventies, and winning both: for Havelocks Sports Club, and Orients basketball club. He was a gentle giant, who will be sorely missed by all who played and loved sports, and also those of us who were fortunate to have Royden as a close friend. We were fellow parishioners at St Lawrence’s Church, Wellwatte, in addition, to be alumni of St Peter’s (though years apart), but I really got to know Royden very well during our days in Dubai. We have some great times, watching sporting events like the ...

Vale Mario Pieris, who lived a full life – By Lawrence Machado Vale dear friend, Mario Pieris. I cannot believe you are gone so soon. You were always the cheeky but reliable altar server at St Lawrence’s Church, Wellawatte. Father of four, Mario, died peacefully in a Seattle hospital yesterday. We served many times together for the daily, Sunday, Christmas, Easter, and feast days, which were so special to us. You were the very popular bell ringer when we went for our Madhu pilgrimage with St Lawrence’s in the seventies. You were later the handsome charmer and talented sportsman at St Lawrence’s youth club before going on to be a flamboyant rugby star, helping St Joseph’s College, Colombo, re-establish themselves as a highly-respected side. You were also a top Scout leader at college. I am glad we caught up in Sri Lanka many moons ago and spent time together reminiscing about old ...

Obituary – Sampath Ratnatunga (September 8, 1958 – January 15, 2021) – by Lawrence Machado Vale dear friend and classmate Sampath Ratnatunga, whom I knew for more than 55 years, starting from our early days at kindergarten at St Peter’s College.  Friends also knew you as Sammy and Sam. In Sri Lanka, you worked in the travel trade for years, including KLM, but later in Melbourne, you completely changed professions, becoming a professional massage therapist, running your own business, Pascoe Vale Sports and Remedial Massage Therapy from your home, until a few years ago, healing and helping hundreds of people. You then showed your dedication to the medical field by donating your body for medical science. Like many of your friends, I cannot believe you are gone and won’t be there for our regular chats about anything which catches our fancy: from family and friends, to sharing a virtual drink, ...

Lighting up the lives of poor Sri Lankan one village at a time – By Lawrence Machado A tiny spark of light which began four years ago after a Sydney-based Sri Lankan couple read the inspiring story of a girl in a remote village in Sri Lanka doing well in her GCE without the benefit of lighting is now an ever growing brightness for the poor. The Anduren Eliya – Darkness to Light – solar powered light donation program is one of the most successful solar projects done in Sri Lanka, without fanfare and by selfless volunteers led by Chandra Fernando, his wife Marie, family, friends and the community. Each solar package – manufactured in China –includes two lights, a solar panel, storage batteries and cables. The solar power project has special meaning for Mr Fernando. “The solar program was started in May 2014, after we read an article about a ...
