Could This Be The Legendary “Magic Bridge” Connecting India And Sri Lanka? – by Patrick Ranasinghe Location   The bridge starts as a chain of shoals from the Dhanushkodi tip of India’s Pamban Island. It ends at Sri Lanka’s Mannar Island. Pamban Island is accessed from the Indian mainland by the 2-km-long Pamban Bridge. Mannar Island is connected to mainland Sri Lanka by a causeway. Geological evolution  Considerable diversity of opinion and confusion exists about the nature and origin of this structure. In the 19th century, two significant theories were prominent in explaining the structure. One considered it to be formed by the process of accretion and rising of the land. At the same time the other surmised that it was established by the breaking away of Sri Lanka from the Indian mainland. Jimmy Ellis ( Orion ) – by Patrick Ranasinghe James Hodges Ellis (born James Hughes Bell, February 26, 1945 – December 12, 1998), who used the stage name Orion at times in his career, was an American singer. His voice was similar to Elvis Presley’s, a fact which he and his record company played upon, making some believe that some of his recordings were by Presley, or even that Presley had not died in 1977. At the start of his music career Ellis sang in nightclubs, and in 1964 released a single, “Don’t Count Your Chickens”, for a small Georgia label, Dradco. His vocals closely resembled Elvis Presley, and in 1969 Shelby Singleton, who had acquired the rights to Sun Records’ back catalogue, other than Presley’s recordings for the label, released a single of Ellis’ recordings of Presley’s early songs, “That’s All Right (Mama)” and “Blue Moon of Kentucky”. The ...

Remembering Buddy Musafer RIP – by Patrick Ranasinghe Swing Along with the Spitfires Budrian Musafer My “stage” career commenced around 1960, at the age of 18. Appeared on stage shows presented by Tina Maria, Priya, Decima and Malcolm Andree at the Atlanta and the Kandy Lake Club. Then went on to sing with various pop bands – “The Sombreros”, “Sound Tracks” and a few others. In 1966, I was invited by Nizam Adahan to listen to a band called the ‘Spit‑res’ – at rehearsals – where he was the lead guitarist. I tried out a song with Conrad de Silva, who was their male vocalist and our voices blended in harmony… well that was the beginning of “Conrad & Budrin with the Spit‑res”. This was the part of my musical career that I enjoyed the most. The band went through many changes with the addition of Dalreen. When Conrad left ...
