How I made good in Australia, some reminiscences –  Dr. Harold Gunatillake  Dr. Harold Gunatillake In 1969, I returned to the island with my fellowship degree and intensive training with one of the famous surgeons in London, Mr Norman Tanner, having served as Senior Registrar at Queen Mary’s Hospital Orthopaedics. I still recollect the interview for the selection for this post, sitting in front of a panel of professionals and administrators and over 50 applicants sitting in the waiting room waiting for their interview for a single position. Many of them were locally qualified Britons. SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS MAY 2022 Compiled by Victor Melder   Sri Lanka Cricket is planning to conduct Sri Lanka ‘A and Australia ‘A’ cricket series concurrently with Sri Lanka- Australia National cricket series from next June and its confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Chief Executive officer (CEO) Ashely de Silva yesterday. Australia’s National men’s cricket team will arrive in Sri Lanka to play all format cricket series which will work off from June 7 to July 12 while in this same period we have made arrangements to conduct Sri Lanka ‘A’ and Australia ‘A’ cricket series here. SRI LANKA NEWS (MAY 2022)- By Victor Melder. Tea production in March had slumped by 24% to 22 million kg from a year earlier, marking it as the lowest crop since 2009, Asia Siyaka Commodities said. It also said in 2020 when the country went into complete lockdown in mid-March and production declined to 13.5 million kg. Quoting Sri Lanka Tea Board preliminary data, Asia Siyaka said first quarter production dropped by 15% to 63 million kg from 74.5 million kg a year ago. This year’s January – March figure is also the lowest since 2009. In that year production slumped due to fallout from the global financial crisis and the market collapsed, teas remained unsold and farmers stopped plucking their fields and estates were pruned.  Asia Siyaka said this year’s first quarter losses however resulted from dry weather that took its toll on bushes that had not received adequate fertilizer ...

Headline inflation increased to 14.2 per cent in January 2022 from 12.1 per cent in December 2021, says the Central Bank of Sri Lanka It is measured by the year-on-year change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2013=100), On an annual average basis, the CCPI increased to 6.9 per cent in January 2022 from 6.0 per cent in December 2021. Inflation was driven by monthly increases of prices of items in both food and non-food categories. Subsequently, food inflation increased to 25.0 per cent in January 2022 from 22.1 per cent in December 2021. Non-food inflation increased to 9.2 per cent in January 2022 from 7.5 per cent in December 2021, the CBSL adds. Export earnings from rubber, coconut and cinnamon are on the verge of exceeding $ 4 billion, creating history by recording the highest annual income generated from these crops in a year, Plantation Industries Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said. He also said that the Plantation Ministry was committed to make the tea industry a profitable industry in 2022. He said despite not being able to reach the target export earnings, tea crop was estimated to be 305 million kg in 2021. He outlined that the tea industry was a key export crop which contributed significantly to the national economy. “If we want to build up the economy, then we must strengthen the planters.
