SRI LANKA NEWS – MARCH 2023 – by Victor Melder. Sri Lanka’s inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) declined to 50.6 percent in February 2023 from 51.7 percent in January, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Tuesday. The CCPI for all items for the month of February 2023 marginally increased to 189.5 from 188.6 in January. The Year on Year inflation of Food Group decreased to 54.4 percent in February from 60.0 percent in January and the Year on Year inflation of Non Food Group increased to 48.8 percent in February 2023 from 47.9 percent in the previous month. For the month of February 2023, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was 17.23 percent and the contribution of Non Food items was 33.36 percent.   SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS Compiled – by Victor Melder   (JANUARY 2023) Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed Chris Clarke-Irons as the Lead Physiotherapist of the National Team, with effect from January 1, 2023. Chris is on a two-year contract with Sri Lanka Cricket and his first official tour with the Sri Lanka National Team will be the Sri Lanka Tour of India 2022–2023. Chris, who holds a BSc (Hons) Degree in Physiotherapy obtained from the University of East London and an MSc in Advanced Physiotherapy from Kings College, London, was the Head of Science and Medicine and also the Lead Physiotherapist of the Essex County Cricket Club, before joining Sri Lanka Cricket. He also held stints with the England Men’s Team during an ODI Tour of Australia and also functioned as the physiotherapist for the ECB’s Senior Men’s Pace Program. SRI LANKA NEWS (JANUARY 2023) Compiled – by Victor Melder. The Police Narcotics Bureau in operations conducted in 2022 along with other security forces agencies has arrested 46,258 people related to drug offenses. During the raids conducted in 2022, 1,548 kg of heroin were seized. The value of the seized heroin is over 20.9 billion rupees. Also, the police have raided around 200 places near schools where drugs, intoxicants, intoxicating toffee chocolates and other sweets were sold. Police continue to conduct these raids on information received that the school students are addicted to various types of drugs including ice (crystal methamphetamine) drugs, narcotic pills and intoxicating sweets. A Sri Lankan athlete and a senior official have gone missing after the fifth day’s events of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on Tuesday. Initial reports indicate that a female judoka and the manager of the Sri Lanka Judo Team have disappeared from the Sri Lankan camp soon after she lost her first-round event on Monday. The Sri Lankan Team Management have immediately informed the relevant authorities about their disappearance and the Birmingham Metropolitan Police have started a special inquiry into the incident. As a result, the Chef-de-Mission of the Sri Lankan contingent Maj. Gen (retired ) Dampath Fernando told that he has decided to acquire all passports of the Sri Lankan contingent to avoid further disappearances.
