Sri Lankan Community Eid Celebration in Brisbane Source: Brisbane Sri Lankan Newsletter – Dæhæna – June 2022 Muslims across the world celebrate the Eid festival every year at the completion of a month of fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. On 7 May 2022, Sri Lankan Muslims celebrated this year’s Eid festival with a wide cross section of fellow Sri Lankans living in Brisbane. This was the first time such an event has taken place in Brisbane. The event was held at the Darul Uloom Mosque in Woolloongabba and attended by about 100 members of the wider Sri Lankan community in Brisbane including representatives of several Sri Lankan organisations, together with about 50 members of the Sri Lankan Muslim community. OAAQ Maroons Charity Walk 2021 By Nipuna Fonseka Source:Brisbane 4EB Sri Lankan Newsletter – Dæhæna – December 2021 On Sunday, 14 November 2021, approximately a hundred Queenslanders participated in a 3 km or 6 km walk around Berrinba Wetlands Park, Browns Plains to raise funds for a worthy cause. The purpose of the walk organised by the Old Anandians Association of Queensland Inc. (OAAQ), was to raise funds for an oxygen supply system to a COVID-19 ward at Negombo Hospital in Sri Lanka. This is the seventh edition of the walk that OAAQ has organised and marks the resumption of this annual event after a hiatus due to Covid Restrictions in 2020. Anton and Bronwen Swan felicitated by the Sri Lankan Community Source:Dæhæna – Monthly e-Newsletter – April 2021 Anton Swan, the Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Queensland was felicitated on his receiving the OAM at the Australia Day awards.The community thanked him and his wife Bronwen Swan for the 30 years of service to the Sri Lankan community in Queensland, in front of a section of the diplomatic community including the Consul General of Sri Lanka for New South Wales and Queensland, Lakshman Hulugalle, on Sunday 21 March. The function was hosted by FSOQ. The evening that started with flowers and garlands to the guests included speeches to recognise his service over the years and presentation of a plaque as a memento interspersed by cultural dances from the Sri Lankan and Bharatha Natyam traditions. Patron Anton Swan receives OAM in Australia Day Honours OAM honours for Anton Swan Source: Sri Lanka Sports Association of Queensland Anton Swan, Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Queensland and Sri Lanka Sports Association patron, was awarded an OAM (Medal in the Order of Australia) in the Australia Day Honours issued today (January 26). Mr Swan received his award for his selfless service to the Sri Lankan community in Queensland. Apart from his long-standing involvement with the SLSAQ, Mr Swan also is the patron of the Federation of Sri Lankan Organisations of Queensland and Sri Lanka Ex-Servicemen’s and Police Association Queensland. He is the Dean of the Consular Corps of Queensland, made up of consuls and consul-generals representing 47 countries.
