Pakistan pace quartet stand between winning and losing their first T20 World Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sport Editor)   Shaheen Shah Afridi leads a Pakistan pace quartet that can dismantle England’s batting line-up and their chances of snatching this edition of T20 World Cup.  England looked invincible against India,  chasing a par total. But they will be challenged if Pakistan wins the toss and invite them to have a first go with the bat.  Pakistan have a lethal pace combination that can destroy the best batting line-ups in the world, and a two paced MCG will give them the impetus to achieve just that  backed by serious options with spin. Pakistan’s batting has proved second to none.  Skipper Barbar Azam leads a talented line-up that can score freely on their day. SRI LANKA WIPE THE SMILE OFF THE IRISH – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Sri Lanka’s bowlers stifled a dangerous Ireland batting line-up and then the familiar picture of an in-form Kusal Mendis stepped in, bludgeoning a hapless Irish attack, smashing an unbeaten 68 off 43 deliveries to give them a glimmer of hope of surprising many in this edition of the T20 World Cup.  A backup pace attack did an incredible job to restrict and bamboozle the Irishmen before the big guns, Wanindu Hasarsnga De Silva and Maheesh Theeksheena strangled the run flow while picking up wickets at random to give the batsmen the relief of an achievable target.  There was no panic, as the Sri Lankans plotted a cool calm and calculated chase. With little terrors in the Irish attack to deal with, there was no disorientation like in the game against Namabia. Missing explosive Pathum Nissanka, Sri Lanka ...

Sri Lanka’s women have much to celebrate in humbling defeat at Asia Cup. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Image Source : hindustantimes Beaten but unbowed, Sri Lanka’s women returned home with a lesson on how the best in the world compete as India cleverly and clinically dissected the challenger to grab the Asia Cup for the seventh time. Obviously overawed by the occasion, Sri Lanka crumbled under the pressure of expectation and this could have not been more evident than the frantic run outs early in the game that sealed their fate. Riding on the back of Renuka Singh 3 for 5 and brilliant batter Smiriti Mandhana 51 not out off 25 balls laced with 3 sixers and 6 fours, India dismantled Sri Lanka with consummate ease. Losing skipper and mainstay Chamari Athapaththu in the third over, the Lankan batting was in all sorts as they stumbled in disarray, then ...

Asia Cup and World Cup brings perspective to Sri Lanka. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  Asia Cup and World Cup appear to be two world’s apart.  Ask Sri Lanka, they will confirm this in the affirmative.  Brimming with confidence and riding the crest of a wave since being crowned the champion of Asia, they were jolted into reality when unseeded Namibia brought them down to earth and reminded all in this unpredictable format, anything is possible.  A general outlook on the game suggests complacency,  and a given anticipation that made Sri Lanka perceive they were above what was before them. Namibia made a strong case to be considered as the next top rung representative at World cricket when they embarrassed a cock – a – hoop Sri Lanka who are expected to be a serious challenge to the best in the world.  Sri Lanka for their part,  are guilty ...

Sri Lankan cricketers leave with a ‘parting message’ – By CALLISTUS DAVY Source : sundayobserver With the euphoria of winning the Asia Cup subsiding and the focus now on the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, the Sri Lanka team departed with a warning that hysterical followers of the country’s main passion better watch their steps and not be over the moon that a bigger trophy is within striking distance. Sri lanka cricket Captain Dasun Shanaka – By Nivran Weerakoon Source : Nivran Weerakoon linkedin   captured in the image below is one of the most understated persons who played a pivotal role in scripting a triumph that could potentially restore the old glory of Sri Lanka Cricket. Dasun was never earmarked as a future captain. When he became the captain last year, he was not even a permanent fixture of the team. What amazes me is how cool headed Dasun is and how he fearlessly took on the leadership role in the midst of a number of challenges including a number of match losses prior to the Asia Cup, with the exception of the Australian tour of Sri Lanka where Sri Lanka won. Amazing lessons of key leadership traits for any emerging leader to emulate can be observed from Dasun’s approach on how he gradually built a young team, picking ...
