SUNDAY CHOICE – WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO COMMIT ? – By Charles Schokman Image Source : facebook WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO COMMIT? “The story is told of a man in a fancy restaurant who started to choke on a bone. A doctor rushed over, identified himself as a doctor, and reassured the man that he was going to be all right. He performed the Heimlich Maneuver and the bone popped out. As the man’s breath and voice returned he said, “I’m ever so grateful, doctor, how can I ever repay you?” The doctor smiled and said, “I’ll settle for one-tenth of what you were willing to pay while you were choking.” It’s true, isn’t it, that when you’re facing a crisis (especially a life-threatening crisis), you would give everything you have to get through it. Money is no object! We do the same thing on a spiritual level. How ...

An Inspirational Message for March 2025 – By Charles Schokman In Jesus’ day, the declaration that “Jesus is Lord” carried far more cultural and political significance—and consequences—than it does for many of us today, depending on where we live in the world. An early Church Father named Polycarp (c. 69–155 AD) was the Bishop of Smyrna (modern-day İzmir, Turkey). He was believed to be a disciple of John the Apostle and played a key role in preserving and defending apostolic teaching against early heresies. Polycarp was highly respected among early Christians, and his writings, especially his Letter to the Philippians, provide valuable insight into the theology and practices of the early Church. Polycarp was martyred around 155 AD under Roman persecution. His death is famously recorded in The Martyrdom of Polycarp, one of the earliest Christian martyrdom accounts. He was arrested and brought before the Roman proconsul in an arena filled with spectators ...

Chinese Fleet’s Impact on Sri Lanka in the Early 15th Century Source:Thuppahis Charles Schokman’s Discovery of Amazing Facts conveyed in an Email entitled “A Bit of Ceylon History” Amazing how they sailed with 30,000 sailors on 35 massive ships In fact some ships were garden ships supplying food to the sailors! The Seven Voyages of Zheng He – World History Encyclopedia In 2014, I had read that the Chinese had a map of  the East and West coasts of both North and South America dated about 80 years earlier than Columbus’s voyage, owned by Zheng He. I found out about the 7 voyages and the treasure ships. I also learned that the only people that dared to attack the Chinese flotilla were the Lankans. They refused to engage, but on their return voyage from India they landed in Galle and sent word to the king of Kotte (Alageswara) that they ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – By Charles Schokman When God Walks with Us Through the Dark Valleys of Life. Discovering how faith can be renewed and strengthened through adversity. “When things are going well in life, all seems possible. But when in the depths of life’s valley, we can feel defeated, powerless and hopeless. Many years ago, I found myself at such a low point. I was facing challenges in all aspects of life: ministry, marriage and personal. At the time, I couldn’t see the positive in any of it. The author Os Hillman, wrote, “Life is often very much like this. It is often lived forward but understood backward. It is not until we are down the road a bit that we can appreciate the terrain God has allowed us to scale and the spiritual deposits He has made in our life as a result.” When I reflect on that time ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – A PARENT’S RESPONSIBILITY – By Charles Schokman In a world that’s becoming ever more materialistic, in a world where both parents and children, more and more, draw their values from what they see on their phones than from their family, what does it mean to actually bless your children? I don’t know a single parent who doesn’t want their children to be blessed. In fact, my strong suspicion is that somehow, God’s hardwired us as parents, to want to bless our children. We can’t help ourselves. But we live in a world with a distorted view of blessing. The more affluent a society becomes, the more “blessing our kids” seems to mean running them to every possible activity after school and on weekends, making sure they have all the latest gadgets and toys and designer fashions. In fact, when we don’t do those things, we start feeling guilty. I ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – The Jesus Story – By Charles Schokman Our Daily Bread — The Jesus Story Read 1 John 1:1-5 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it. 1 John 1:2 Most people have never heard of Kate Hankey, but she was a remarkable woman. A teacher, evangelist, school organizer, missionary, and poet, she faithfully served Jesus in 1800s England. In 1867, Kate contracted a serious illness. During her recovery, she penned a lengthy poem in two parts: “The Story Wanted” and “The Story Told.” The poem expresses in a very personal way her relationship with Jesus and the events of His life. All Scripture points to Jesus and tells His story. John begins his epistle reminding readers how they had personally experienced Jesus: “That which . . . we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – NO MORE LEFTOVERS – By Charles Schokman Image Source : facebook NEW YEARS RESOLUTION The day after Christmas, we had enough leftovers in our refrigerator to feed the eight people who had shared the meals again. As the week went on, we reheated, snacked, and made full meals out of the leftovers. We tossed most of the leftovers and kept a few that we thought would still be usable and enjoyed a pizza. As we begin a new year, I wonder if containers of spiritual, emotional, and mental leftovers are taking up space in my mind and heart. Maybe the same is true for you. What about that foil-covered dish of unforgiveness hidden away on that lower shelf? Maybe you pulled it out, dumped it, cleaned the container, and made space for love. Forgive the person who hurt them. Why are you keeping that plastic bowl of resentment? It’s ...
