How car-park cricket in Lebanon gives Sri Lankan migrant workers an escape – By Emma John Source : theguardian Sri Lankan workers and a women’s project at a Syrian refugee camp come together for games in an underground car park When Fernando Sugath arrived in Lebanon in the mid-1990s, cricket was an underground sport. Literally. After living in Beirut for a year as one of the country’s 80,000 Sri Lankan migrant workers, a fellow countryman he met in a supermarket invited him to a game. “I had been looking for somewhere to play,” says Sugath. “Also, I didn’t have any friends.” He turned up at the address he was given to discover the players crammed into a tiny underground car park beneath an apartment building. Sugath is a man used to improvising. “As kids we didn’t need a big playing area or good equipment to play,” he says. “We used plastic balls, the ...

“Kai Tak Heart Attack” – By GEORGE BRAINE In the mid-1990s, when I began to play casual cricket in Hong Kong, some games were at Mission Road grounds, in Kowloon. Cricket was a low priority sport, so football was also played there, and the grass was somewhat patchy. Kowloon is a crowded part of Hong Kong, and we could see mid-rise buildings and a multi-storied public school nearby. Cricket at Mission Road was dramatic, but not due to the prowess on the field. The ground was right beneath the flight path to Kai Tak airport, only about two nautical miles away. Kai Tak was one of the busiest airports in the world, and jets landed every five minutes or so. And some of them flew over Mission Road. A thundering noise of a low flying aircraft would signal another approaching flight, and a great shadow would glide across the field ...

Vale’ Gavin Stevens – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Family, friends, Old Anthonians and ex-Havelocks and opposing Club players gathered to pay fond farewell to former Rugby great Gavin Stevens at the Wilson Chapel in Springvale. Gavin departed the world aged 82. He was a respected sportsman at his old schools St. Sylvester’s College and St Anthony’s in Kandy representing both schools at Soccer, Cricket and Rugby Union. He also played Rugby for Outstation schools against the Colombo schools for St. Anthony’s Katugastota. He was a gentle giant of the Rugby scene in Sri Lanka representing Kandy Rugby Football Club before moving to Colombo where he pulled on the Havelocks jumper with distinction. He later went on to represent Sri Lanka as a tough nut front rower fondly known as ‘Rhino’ for his fearless foraging, and many who opposed him found him to be a tough proposition. Among former team ...

Dasun Shanaka Great Captain and Sportsman – “Not only cricket, but other sports should also be on top” – by Kithsiri Senadeera I have the highest regard for our Sri Lanka’s cricket captain Dasun Shanaka  not only because he lead a young team to win the T20 Asia Cup under extremely difficult conditions, but the statement he made at the post-match press conference after winning the Asia Cup. Dasun Shanaka said “Not only Cricket, but other sports should also be on top. But the media always speak only about cricket. It is a big thing if we talk about other games and bring them up,”   We all should admire his selflessness statement. Instead of asking for more benefits for his own sport, he is requesting to support other sports as well. I am touched by his bravery to make such a statement and his social conscience and empathy. As far as I am aware this is ...
