SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS Complied by Victor Melder  (MAY 2023) Sri Lanka will earn as much as Rs. 8.6 billion per year over a four year period (Rs. 34.2 billion in total income) as the island’s allocation from the International Cricket Council’s annual payouts.  In US dollars Sri Lanka’s share is 27.12 million compared to India’s lion’s share of USD 230 million but the amount in still massive by Sri Lanka’s standards. The International Cricket Council has made the allocations taking into account factors like performance in both the men’s and women’s teams on the international stage over the past 16 years and contribution to the ICC’s commercial value. The earnings of the ICC of over $3.2 billion come from the sale of its media rights alone, which recently, for the first time, were sold across five separate regions globally including the Indian market. Sri Lanka eclipsed in pulsating thriller. New Zealand complete clean sweep – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Beaten but unbowed, Sri Lanka engaged New Zealand in an epic decider which ended in a heart stopping Kiwi win with a ball to spare. The Islanders left New Zealand shores with a semblance of their reputation restored. After a torrid tour in the Tests and one-dayers, the Lankans redeemed some pride going down 2-1 but after a much better effort where the home team had to work hard for their success. New Zealand had a clean sweep in all formats indicating their steady rise in the world rankings and the revelation there is no lack of talent in both batting and bowling as some regulars were missing making big money in the IPL. A final analysis will suggest the Lankans were comprehensively outclassed by a stronger opponent. The Queenstown ...

Sheep to the slaughterhouse in Auckland – Sri Lanka surrender in the house of pain – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) The Test series was a disaster, so Sri Lanka changed focus and sought solace and new direction from the one day series. But that dream of a reversal of fortunes quickly dissipated to horror as New Zealand thrashed the hapless Lankans in the first one-dayer at the garden of pain in Auckland. Known over the ages for being a venue where the Kiwis are unstoppable, mainly in Rugby Union,  the Lankans were quickly reminded about this statistic as New Zealand’s batters and bowlers ran riot to complete an embarrassing demolition of the visiting Islanders. Dasun Shanaka and his team will reflect on a lack of proper preparation and planning of the tour where most of the squad were given insufficient time to acclimatise and work out ...

Off field issues appear to weigh down Lankans as India grab unassailable lead – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Sri Lanka changed tactics and batted first but the batters crumbled once more and the result was no different.  India, set a meagre 215,  made short work of the target to comfortably win with 41 balls to spare and grab an unassailable 2-0 lead. It’s been a dreary sequence of events for the troubled Sri Lankans whose on field blues appear to have off field issues to deal with as well. And if this is the reason for their shabby display there’s plenty to be done to get their mindset back on track. And that’s not going to happen midtour or anytime soon after it. Although the horse has bolted in terms of the series, Sri Lanka need to find a way to regroup hurriedly if they want to return home ...

India wins despite Dasun Shanaka’s century effort Source:-Dailynews India recorded a comprehensive 67-run win over the touring Sri Lankan side in the 1 st game of 3 match ODI series in Rajkot. Sri Lanka who won the toss and opted to bowl first had no clue whatsoever in their bowling effort where India’s batters easily dominated the Sri Lankan bowling attack and cruised easily throughout the whole inning. Almost the whole Indian top order made some statement innings where openers Rohit Sharma and Subman Gill scored hefty half-centuries to set up the tone for their star batter Virat Kohli to come and score a fine century for India to post a mammoth 373 runs for a loss of 7 wickets. In the reply, Sri Lanka got on to the worst start possible where Avishka Fernando who made a comeback to the national side fell for 5 runs and followed up ...

Shanaka dazzles in a losing effort. Sri Lanka fall in first one-dayer – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka continues his purple patch with the bat but his unbeaten century in a losing effort underlined the inconsistency of his team. When the bowlers produce great economy the batters let them down. This time it was the opposite as the fully represented Indian batting sent them on a leather hunt after being invited to bat first.  Chasing 373 was a daunting target from the outset. But the Sri Lanka batters for once took on the challenge but fell short by 67 runs. Shanaka has been widely and unfairly criticised for his leadership in the shorter formats. But the purists fail to see or acknowledge his success rate which has been the best since the days of their great leaders of the past,  Mahela Jayawardena ...
