Vale Dr Siri – A remarkable human being – By Dr Palitha Ganewatta The Sri Lankan community in Australia, particularly in Sydney, is in shock and saddened to hear the untimely passing of Dr Siri Kannangara, a doctor par excellence and kind-hearted and remarkable gentleman, who dedicated his professional life to serve not only the community he belonged to but the wider Australian multicultural community. Being a medical specialist, Siri never refused to treat any Sri Lankan, who requested his service, despite his busy professional life. Once I asked him the reason for this unparalleled generosity and Siri’s response was, “My country educated me and made me a medical practitioner, so I must pay gratitude to it by rendering my service to Sri Lankans in Australia which I made my second home.”  In addition to his yeoman service, Siri has voluntarily trained young Sri Lankan doctors to serve in Sri ...

A short story- The Sinhala Avurudu Auspicious time-  අවුරුදු නැකත  By Dr Palitha Ganewatta, Sydney, Australia         Nayana stared at the clock on the wall and thought that time was passing very slowly today. She put two Pyrex dishes on the table after washing and wiping them with a white cloth hung on the pantry cupboard hook. A little after washing the rice-cooker she thought, it was still too early to cook the milk rice. The auspicious time for eating was at 1.46 a.m. and the cooking of the first meal would be 27 minutes past midnight. Nayana decided to plan for cooking the milk rice immediately after midnight. It was about an hour since she took some brown rice and the packet of ‘Maggie’ coconut milk, which she had bought from the Asian shop the day before and placed them on the table. Her worry was how to wake ...

A tribute Late Mr Turin Fonseka – By Dr Palitha Ganewatta, Sydney We have lost one of the most dedicated elders in Sri Lankan community in Sydney. Mr Turin Fonseka passed away a few days ago at the age of 90. He was instrumental in education young Sri Lankan children growing up in this multicultural society. One of his major community achievements was the establishment of Minto Sinhala school in mid 1990s. It vividly demonstrated his far-sighted vision of catering to Sinhalese community in western suburbs like, Campbelltown and Minto, where Sinhalese community was growing rapidly during last two decades of the last century. The Minto Sinhala language school has opened a wider opportunity to Sinhalese children of that areas to gain not only the knowledge of Sinhalese language and culture but to participate in multicultural festivities of that region. Mr Fonseka had served many years as a teacher of ...
