OBITUARY Dr NALINI KUMARI KAPPAGODA (21 Jan 1936 – 23 July 2021)   It is with much sadness that I record the demise of Dr Nalini Kappagoda, lately of Bundanoon and Killara. Dr Nalini Kappagoda, a long-time resident, of West Pymble, Killara, and Bundanoon, in New South Wales, passed away at the age of 85 on 23 July. She was most likely the only student in the history of the Medical College to collect a bag of 4 gold medals during a studentship. Vale Mario Pieris, who lived a full life – By Lawrence Machado Vale dear friend, Mario Pieris. I cannot believe you are gone so soon. You were always the cheeky but reliable altar server at St Lawrence’s Church, Wellawatte. Father of four, Mario, died peacefully in a Seattle hospital yesterday. We served many times together for the daily, Sunday, Christmas, Easter, and feast days, which were so special to us. You were the very popular bell ringer when we went for our Madhu pilgrimage with St Lawrence’s in the seventies. You were later the handsome charmer and talented sportsman at St Lawrence’s youth club before going on to be a flamboyant rugby star, helping St Joseph’s College, Colombo, re-establish themselves as a highly-respected side. You were also a top Scout leader at college. I am glad we caught up in Sri Lanka many moons ago and spent time together reminiscing about old ...

Passing away of former UNP MP for Ambalangoda, Mr. Buddhika Sarath Kurukularatne- by Algi Wijewickrema Source: Algi Wijewickrema FB Just received the sad news of the passing away of my friend, boss and guru, former UNP MP for Ambalangoda, Mr. Buddhika Sarath Kurukularatne, this morning. He was a journalist, lawyer, author and a qualified and experienced Personnel Manager apart from being a politician. I would venture to say too honest to have been in parliament. My working career was given a turbo boost by this humane ‘Boss’ who inspired me when things looked all but lost in 1981. After recruiting me to Balfour Beatty Nuttal JV who were the Main Civil Contactors for the Victoria Dam & Hydro-Electric project, he made sure I never looked back. He was not in good health for some time but I was hoping to have a little chat with him on 19th when he ...

Obituary: BUDDY MUSAFER – passed away – by Sohan Pieris   A very very sad day for all musicians in SL today. He was not doing well for a while and believe it or not he could not talk – lost  his voice.. We were very close as friends and musicians. I was devastated to hear the news. His elder brother Hassan who was a superb drummer passed away about 6 months ago in Hong Kong. This pix was taken in Australia during one of our tours that I will treasure. He was life of the party keeping all of us in fits of laughter all the time. Here’s another shot with his two sisters and his brother Hassan the drummer who passed away just 6 months ago. Here’s a song I unearthed, which he recorded 40 yrs ago that exudes his humour and laughter to the max. He did it in 3 takes ...
