India strives for cobalt in contested ocean waters – By Arundathie Abeysinghe Image Source : asianews India is attempting to secure rights to explore a cobalt-rich underwater mountain in the middle of the Indian Ocean due to fears over China’s presence in the region. Sri Lanka is also planning to mine the region for precious minerals, adding to the competition. Cobalt is a critical mineral widely used in electric vehicles and batteries and seen as a vital element in the green energy transition. In January, India had contacted the Jamaica-based International Seabed Authority (ISA) seeking approval to explore the cobalt-rich Afanasy Nikitin Seamount (AN Seamount), situated in the central Indian Ocean, east of the Maldives, approximately 1,350 kilometers (850 miles) from the Indian coast. ISA is an autonomous world body set up under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Analysts are of the view that New Delhi ...

Arundhati Roy draws the Indian Government’s Ire – By Michael Roberts AFP News Item in The GUARDIAN, 11 October 2023 The Booker prize-winning Indian novelist Arundhati Roy could be prosecuted for a 2010 speech about Kashmir after a top official signed off on the move, according to reports in India. Roy, 61, is one of India’s most famous living authors but her writing and activism, including her criticism of the prime minister Narendra Modi’s government, have made her a polarising figure in the country. A criminal complaint accusing her and several others of sedition had languished in India’s notoriously glacial criminal justice system since it was filed in 2010. But on Tuesday, Indian media reported that VK Saxena, the top official in the administration governing Delhi, had given approval for the case to proceed before the courts. Saxena’s directive said there was enough evidence for a case to take place against Roy ...

India emerge as raging favourites for World Cup. But are they peaking too early? – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports editor)   India and Australia have parallel thinking before a World Cup in that they utilise a similar strategy to work out potentially dangerous opponents by placing a series between them before the real event.  We have seen this time and time again. And this edition of the World Cup in India sees two definite contenders go head to head with this in mind before the World Cup proper.  The cat and mouse strategy is meant to fine tune the strengths and weaknesses between the squads with the ultimate aim to outhink their opponents in the decider if they meet. Both teams loom large to take out this edition. But write off Pakistan, England, New Zealand and South Africa at your peril.  India take momentum and home ground ...

Sriraj and India scuttle hapless Sri Lanka to grab Asia Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor) Sri Lanka went from heroes to zero in just over 15 overs as India gave them a thrashing in the Asia Cup final they can Never forget.  Just days after relegating world number one ranked Pakistan to the sidelines in a heart stopper, Sri Lanka just rolled over and let themselves be humiliated in front of a packed home crowd, and an entire population, losing without a whimper.  Excuses about winning the toss in overcast conditions and electing to bat does little to convince me that there is more to it than meets the eye. It would be vindicated if they were without a coaching staff who do not give advice on these matters before the toss. Yes, India were favourites to win it with a highly skilled and far ...

India complete Sri Lanka humiliation with little effort – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE India’s second string completed their humiliation of a sub standard Sri Lanka with a T20 thrashing to underlined the difference between the best and the rest. My meanderings about behind the scenes activity relating to India’s team selection for this series proved to be unfounded as the hosts drove home a point as to why they did not need stars to beat teams like Sri Lanka. India took the T20 series 2-1 with a 91 run win in the decider. It says a lot about Sri Lanka’s development, or lack of it, as they stumble and stagger like a drunken sailor valiantly striving to negotiate the path ahead of them. It was just a few months ago that this same team gloated about winning the Asia Cup. They are now scratching their heads trying to figure ...
