New Zealand and England look the favourites but an India- Pakistan final will be a winner – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Pakistan may well reflect on a Houdini act that saw them scramble into the semi finals of the T20 World Cup, but their joy could be short lived against a well balanced New Zealand.  The Kiwis who dropped their guard and were overrun by England after a near faultless campaign upto that stage, are still a formidable force I believe should go all the way. England and India battle for the second spot in  a game that is evenly balanced and could go either way depending on whose day it is. England has been building gradually, and if Jos Butler and Alex Hales continue their consistency, are well justified in their belief they are capable if unsettling the Indians who have shown plenty of vulnerability.  ...

Sapporo Soup Curry – By GEORGE BRAINE Recently, The New York Times carried a feature article on what to eat while traveling in Asia. It recommended a specific dish from India, Thailand, Korea, Japan, and Singapore. Soup Curry was the dish from Japan, and Sapporo, in the northern island of Hokkaido, where I live, is the home of soup curry. To a Sri Lankan, “Japanese curry” sounds like such a mismatch. What would the consumers of sushi – raw fish – know about curry, in which ingredients are cooked to death? So, for a couple of years, I thumbed my nose at local curry. Most supermarkets display a mind boggling variety of packaged curries, but they did not appeal to me.   Curry is said to have arrived in Japan in the 19th century, when Anglo-Indian members of the Royal Navy brought curry powder with them. Since then, the Japanese ...

A migrant’s story – By Ron Pieris I was preparing to migrate to Sydney from Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) in 1974. I was invited to a home in Moratuwa for a meal. I remember it was a sunny day in the summer of ‘74. I took a bus from Bambalapitiya to Moratuwa and walked down to my friend’s home. I was greeted at the entrance by his wife and children who warmly welcomed me. After a bit of small talk, I was requested to move to the dining room. This was a Sinhalese family from the provinces. I noticed that on the dining table was placed a bowl of rice with a saucer for serving and three vegetable curries, and on the centre of the table was placed a single egg. We all served food onto our plates. And all of those present were staring at the egg! I was ...
