KKS Perera’s Take on Dahanayake | The Ceylon Journal-by Avishka Mario Senewiratne Source:Theceylonjournal In the 1977 General Election, former Prime Minister W. Dahanayake lost his seat in Galle to Albert Silva Undeterred by the loss, Dahanayake refused to accept defeat and filed an election petition in the Supreme Court. With limited resources and no legal counsel, he chose to represent himself in the case. Against all odds, he triumphed in the legal battle, forcing Silva to resign. This unexpected victory paved the way for the 77-year-old Dahanayake to make a stunning comeback to Parliament, as he won the Galle by-election in 1979,  by a whopping 14,000 votes. His journey is a testament to the power of perseverance—proving that even in the face of adversity, remarkable comebacks are possible. JVP Reforms, a Template for SJB : NPP Seals Ranil’s IMF Pact – By KKS Perera Source : dailymirror Disgruntled political leaders, who have been Pied Piping the blind followers and politically illiterate masses to oblivion for decades.. Time waits for no one. Washington Irving’s Rip Van Winkle, the Dutch-American villager, fell into a deep sleep and awoke 20 years later to find a transformed world. During his slumber, he missed the American Revolution, which shaped the colonies into a nation rooted in liberty and self-governance. By the time Rip awoke, the ideals of equality and justice had become a rallying cry for change. We blend literary and historical metaphors to emphasise the transformative urgency required for political relevance. The NPP’s proactive reforms stand as a wake-up call to the SJB and beyond! This seismic shift we experienced with recent elections signals a profound transformation in the island’s political landscape, underscoring ...

Fragmented Island Unites: Significance of Stunning Victory – By KKS Perera President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at a political rally in Jaffna Source : dailymirror For the first time in history, Sri Lankans have demonstrated a noteworthy advancement in political literacy, with all three communities rejecting divisive politics. In Thursday’s elections, the NPP secured 61.56% of the total vote, marking a significant increase from the 42.2% they achieved previously. This surge was driven by 1.2 million former SJB, NDF and minority party voters (from the previous 7 million), who shifted their support to the NPP. Meanwhile, only 2.4 million votes went to the rest on 14th; others abstained from voting altogether. It signals a broader mandate and provides a stronger foundation as they move forward in governing the nation. Anyone engaging in excessive lamentation or dramatic expressions of grief over Thursday’s election victory should consider this a long-overdue wake-up call. This outcome, ...

‘Politics’ of AMUDE : Archaic with a Proud History! – By KKS PERERA A few years ago, the government withdrew the fertilizer subsidy sparking widespread demonstrations led by the JVP’s Govi Sammelanaya. The media widely circulated images of the ‘peasants’ dressed in their traditional field attire, the lion cloth (Amude) and protesting on the streets. However, some media outlets were cautious about using the term ‘Amude,’ recognizing that it is becoming obsolete. The government politicians argued that many of the demonstrators labeled as ‘farmers’ were actually individuals from various other industries and trades in the Colombo suburbs. In the 1930s, during his tenure as Minister of Works in the State Council, Sir John Kotelawala was eager to extend the railway lines beyond their existing routes. He often traveled on his inspection tours in very casual attire—just a T-shirt and shorts. On one such outing, he accompanied his leader, D. S. ...

More on Senanayakes and Cricket – By KKS PERERA Dr. Michael Roberts’ enthralling exploration of the Senanayake family and their ties to cricket in last week’s E-lanka provided the inspiration for me to craft this anecdotal script. Don Spater Senanayake, was the son of the lesser-known Don Bartholomeus, a native of the picturesque town of Mahiyangana. According to family lore that has been passed down through the generations, the Senanayake family’s roots can be traced back to an ancient era—the Anuradhapura period, specifically between AD 253 and 266. The tale recounts that during this time, a benevolent King dispatched a delegation from Mahiyangana, entrusted with a sacred Bo sapling. Their mission was to plant this revered sapling at a hallowed location in Attanagalle. The delegation journeyed toward their destination, they decided to rest for the night and carefully placed the Bo sapling in a specially chosen spot. The next morning, ...
