In the 1977 General Election, former Prime Minister W. Dahanayake lost his seat in Galle to Albert Silva Undeterred by the loss, Dahanayake refused to accept defeat and filed an election petition in the Supreme Court. With limited resources and no legal counsel, he chose to represent himself in the case. Against all odds, he triumphed in the legal battle, forcing Silva to resign. This unexpected victory paved the way for the 77-year-old Dahanayake to make a stunning comeback to Parliament, as he won the Galle by-election in 1979, by a whopping 14,000 votes.
