SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS – By Victor Melder Complied by Victor Melder   (JUNE 2023)     Experienced batsman Angelo Mathews was omitted from the Sri Lanka squad for the Cricket World Cup qualifiers this month, in an otherwise unchanged squad named for the three-month ODI series against Afghanistan.  Brought in earlier this year to support an otherwise inexperienced ODI batting line up, Mathews managed just scored of 18, 0 and 12 in three matches since his return, and with only 15 players allowed in the squad, the former captain failed to make the cut.  Of the 15 players named for the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe, only Chamika Karunaratne did not feature in a single game in the series against Afghanistan, which Sri Lanka won 2-1.  Sri Lanka begin their qualification campaign against the United Arab Emirates on June 19, but are scheduled to play two warm up matches ...

Angry awoken Lion’s savage Afgan intrusion.  Sri Lanka annihilate Afghanistan in one day duel. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  Afganistan stepped on the tail of a sleeping Lion and paid the price of a savage mauling at its awakening in the one day series in Hambantota.  Game one saw the visiting Afgans jump the locals in a surprising turnaround. Don’t get me wrong, they are a force in world cricket at the moment. Sri Lanka isn’t.  Stung by the humiliation, Sri Lanka returned fire to annihilate the invaders in games two and three to clinch the three game one day series in emphatic fashion.  It would be fair to say the home team was depleted with the absence of key bowlers Dushmantha Chameera   Maheesh Theeksheena and Wanindu Hasarsnga De Silva in game one.  But the demoralising defeat in that encounter demanded action stations, and the selectors reacted swiftly to ...

Hot-Hot Cricket News: Monies & Lanka’s Team Selections-by Michael Roberts Victor Melder as Compiler Sri Lanka will earn as much as Rs. 8.6 billion per year over a four-year period (Rs. 34.2 billion in total income) as the island’s allocation from the International Cricket Council’s annual payouts.  In US dollars Sri Lanka’s share is 27.12 million compared to India’s lion’s share of USD 230 million but the amount in still massive by Sri Lanka’s standards. The International Cricket Council has made the allocations taking into account factors like performance in both the men’s and women’s teams on the international stage over the past 16 years and contribution to the ICC’s commercial value. The earnings of the ICC of over $3.2 billion come from the sale of its media rights alone, which recently, for the first time, were sold across five separate regions globally including the Indian market. Ruthless Sri Lanka snuff out Irish challenge – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Ireland flexed their muscles after a first Test drubbing, then realized Sri Lanka had a much bigger flex as the second Test turned dramatically in the locals favour on a surprisingly batter friendly Galle surface. From a  position of what seemed like a no result, the tide changed sensationally as the Sri Lankans showed vigorous intent to push for a famous victory and instill new belief that they have turned the corner in terms of orchestrating a fightback and strategy to win games that seemed on a chartered course.  After folding tamely in the first Test, Ireland’s batters found form to post a massive 492, their highest total since receiving Test status.   They threw down the gauntlet, and Sri Lanka accepted,  making the babe’s of world cricket realize it is a bigger picture ...

Fidel & Danny ‘String Together’ Melodious Accounts of Day One at the Galle Test Match-by Michael Robert Source:Thuppahis Andrew Fidel Fernando, in ESPNcricinfo, 16 April 2023, Dimuth Karunaratne struck an assured 179, Kusal Mendis amassed 140, and Sri Lanka took firm grip of the Test, as that pair’s 281-run partnership for the second wicket formed the centrepiece of the hosts’ dominant day one. Not only were Karunaratne and Mendis largely untroubled by the Ireland bowlers on a flat Galle deck, they also ensured that their progress was brisk, hitting 33 fours and a six between them. Sri Lanka lost those batters, plus Angelo Mathews (playing his 100th Test), late in the day. Nevertheless, they finished 386 for 4 – poised for a massive total, with plenty of batting still to come and the track yet to take serious turn. Having lost the toss, then having claimed just one wicket in the first ...
