Australia’s bowlers stifle Pakistan fightback. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports editor) Australia’s  bowlers suffocated and finally extricated Pakistan’s remaining eight wickets to put them in the box seat in a see- sawing third day’s play. Stung by being bowled out for 271,  continuing from 132 for two overnight, Pakistan’s bowlers sent shock waves through the Australia’s camp when Khurram Shahzad removed first innings hero David Warner for a duck and Marnus Labuschagne in quick succession. It underlined the tourists promise that they are not a pushover on this tour.  But Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja dug in and weathered the storm under seige from a hostile Pakistan pace attack and carried Australia to a 300 run lead by the close, taking the sting out of a fightback.  It sure was an engaging day’s cricket that may have a few more twists to its tail as Australia search ...

David Warner smashes brilliant century in build-up to his Swansong. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports editor) David Warner smashed his way to a memorable 164 as he planned to make his retirement etched with lingering memories of a glittering career for Australia.  The dashing left hander was all class and composure as he crafted a important start to the Summer which put Australia in the box seat at the end of day one with an imposing 346 for 5 wickets and a huge psychological advantage over Pakistan on a challenging Perth track. Pat Cummins won the important toss and elected to bat in what could well be decisive to Australia’s fortunes.  Warner and Usman Khawaja played the track to near perfection while surviving a few scares as Pakistan’s Shaheen Shah Afridi, khurram Shahzad and Aamer Jamal  troubled Australia’s openers but let them off the hook with dropped ...

Now, the Test version will take centre ...

Just DESSERTS for India at Cricket World Cup …. & Modi’s Curtness-by Michael Roberts Tunku Varadarajan, in The Wire, 20 November 2023  where the title reads thus: “Cricket Mata Ki Jai: Jingoism Lost in Ahmedabad on Sunday” … while highlights in blue have been imposed by The Editor, Thuppahi That India lost in the final was karmic payback for the BCCI’s sins against the game, and also for the Ahmedabad crowd’s unwillingness to be sporting and civilised. Prime Minister Narendra Modi walking away from Pat Cummins after handing him the trophy. Photo: Screengrab from video Tunku Varadarajan The most remarkable thing about Sunday’s World Cup final was not that India lost. Many of us had seen the defeat coming for days, and some foresaw it as the inevitable fruit of hubris, of “ghamand”. For those inclined to Sanskrit, a couple of lines from the Bhagavad Gita define perfectly the nature of the BCCI (the Board of Control ...

Champions return home after creating a long-lasting legacy Australia captain Pat Cummins believes his team have created a career-defining legacy with their World Cup win, after a long six months on the road in India and England. “I think they have created their own legacy,” Cummins said of his side as he touched down at Sydney Airport. “A World Cup, you only get one chance every four years and especially playing somewhere like India, it’s hard. Even before the tournament, we knew playing ODI cricket in India, it’s a pretty tough assignment. To be pitted up against the rest of the world and come away with a medal, it doesn’t get any better than that. We couldn’t have planned for much better. So a pretty satisfied group.” Captain Pat Cummins and pacer Josh Hazelwood landed in Sydney on Wednesday morning while Head coach Andrew McDonalds and Allrounder Mitchell Marsh touched ...

Australia scamper into another World Cup final after South African scare.  Indian juggernaut looms for Australia’s next challenge.  – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports editor). © ICC 2023 : Photo Courtesy of ICC   Australia continued to stifle South Africa’s aspirations to progress beyond a semi -final of a World Cup as they scampered into another final against a dominant India.  South Africa harbours bitter memories of  being eliminated before the big dance on several occasions, and Australia has been their biggest stumbling block. They just exerted more pain on a hapless nemesis.  They did not go without a fight though sending shock waves through the Australian camp when they grabbed 5 for 137 before Steve Smith,  Josh Inglis and later skipper Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc steadied the ship to see Australia home.  But it was Travis Head who set the pace for Australia’s win with an ...

Pace power trio may be pared down to solo act in Sri Lanka – By Daniel Brettig Source:theage.com.au Power trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are braced for the possibility of becoming a solo act in Sri Lanka, for two Test matches at famously spin-friendly Galle. On Australia’s last Test visit in 2016, Sri Lanka won by 229 runs in just three days at the seaside venue, and bowled a grand total of five overs of pace in the match. While Mitchell Starc was in the middle of the most destructive series of his career, Hazlewood and the allrounder Mitchell Marsh were far from penetrative. It’s those memories – and the success of Australia in adapting to Pakistani conditions earlier this year – that have Hazlewood and company prepared for a scenario whereby captain Cummins and all-rounder Cam Green are the only fast bowling options selected. “It’s probably ...

Sri Lanka will ascertain their true strength against the rampant Australians fresh from a successful tour of Pakistan – by Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne – eLanka Sport editor)   Both teams are currently basking in the glory of series triumphs over Pakistan and Bangladesh away from home making the outcome of the current two Test series a defining moment in the Test Championship rankings. While the tour raises questions about its priority in a country suffering from impending bankruptcy and civil unrest due to political bungling and mismanagement, Sri Lanka Cricket believes it is a justified decision to go ahead due to the revenue it will generate. The Cricket board has pledged a substantial sum of dollars generated from the games  towards urgent medical requirements the country is unable to purchase due to the current crisis.  Sri Lanka Cricket Secretary Mohan De Silva is quoted as saying it will also create ...

Sri Lanka face uphill task against smarting Aussies – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE   Sri Lanka’s mission to the Southern hemisphere appears to be on a tragic course if the results in New Zealand are any indication.  They left empty handed after a winless tour in all formats and life for them appears bleaker as they take on an Australian team smarting from a historic whitewash at home at the hands of the high riding Indians.   While Sri Lanka’s aspirations are more in hope of improvement due to the immaturity in the current squad, the Kiwis and Aussies are proud defenders at home and are uncompromising against all-comers in battle.  The Sri Lankans feature in their first Pink ball Test at the Gabba in Brisbane on February 24 before travelling to Manuka Oval in Canberra for their final encounter which is incidentally the first Test in the Australian ...
