Mike Harridge: Meandering Through the Garden Source:Smritidaniel By the tender age of five, Mike Harridge was already an avid horticulturalist. He remembers his mother’s garden in their home in Havelock Town being crowded with fruit trees – jak, mango, guava and custard apple. For a little boy interested in the natural world, it was a paradise and he grew up on friendly terms with the lizards, frogs and tortoises that scurried, leapt and crawled across their land. He shared this love of animals with his brothers but unlike them he wasn’t very athletic – a case of childhood polio had affected his legs but not his happy temperament.By the time he was four, he was growing spring onions and spinach for their dining table, all the while dreaming of becoming a trapeze artist. What he would actually become was a welder, then an extractor of snake venom, then a keeper of tropical fish…all ...

Thomian, Trinitian to light up Source:Island Peterite scene…in London I’m a Peterite and I know for sure that we, Peterites, do have a whole lot of talented entertainers. And, believe it or not, there is a Peterite entertaining guests at the Galadari Hotel right now! Yes, St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, is celebrating its centenary, this year, and, obviously, there will be lots of special events, organised by the OBU (Old Boys) domiciled abroad, to mark this milestone. The London event is one of them and the Peterites OBU UK is calling it ‘La Bamba Nite 2022.’ It will be held at the Hilton T5 London, on September 17th. The Thomian and Trinitian, who will be in London, to light up the Peterite scene, are Sohan Weerasinghe and Clifford Richards. (No doubt…as the saying goes, variety is the spice of life!) “MUSIC, ART & DRAMA” – by Des Kelly How can I forget. At St.Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya, in Colombo, Ceylon (at the time), during the late 1940s, this writer was introduced to a very young Rev.Fr.Noel Cruz, who happened to be the founder of the Music, Art & Drama Society, as it was called, where young schoolboys with any singing or acting talent were encouraged by this young, handsome Priest, to further their talents, by organizing concerts and/or musical shows to be proudly presented to the public. Fr.Cruz accepted me into this group.on the recommendation of our Art Master of the era, who was fondly referred to, as Papa deNiese who had heard me sing in the Church Choir and reckoned that I didn’t do too bad a job, with all the Latin Hymns I had taught myself, as an Altar-server who sang anything quite naturally, for the love of doing ...
